The Theme of Pursuit of God in the Bible

Abstract

神の探求と発見ということは、聖書を貫く重要主題である。旧約聖書において、神を人間が探し求めて見出すことは、神殿で献げる祈りの文脈では、神の正当な裁きが行われるように祈り求めることを意味した（詩9:11; 27:7-8 を参照）。他方、申命記やエレミヤ書は、捕囚期におけるイスラエルの離散の状況を前提にしながら、神を探し求めるならば、神を見出す可能性を語る（申4:29; エレ29:13-14a）。さらに、エゼキエル書は、羊を探して連れ帰る羊飼の譬え話を通して、離散した民を神が探し求め、イスラエルの地に連れ帰ることになる希望を語っている（エゼ34:11-16）。神を探求して見出すとは、神が失われた者を探し求めることへの応答として神に立ち返ることに他ならない。 新約聖書が伝える初代教会の伝道説教では、人間が神を探し求めて見出すことが出来る可能性が論じられている（使17:27）。他方、既に信仰を持っている者への牧会的勧告においては、神の助けを尋ね求め、ひたすら祈り続けることが、信徒のあるべき姿として推奨されている（マタ7:7;ルカ11:9）。他方、イエスの譬え話においては（マタ18:12-14; ルカ15:4-7）、失われた羊を探し求めて連れ戻す羊飼いが、失われた者である罪人を捜し求めて連れ戻す神のメタファーになっている。 これに対して、トマス福音書に採録されている「漁労の譬え話」（トマ福8）や、「真珠を見いだした商人の譬え話」（トマ福76）は、価値あるものを探して見出す登場人物たちの行動を真理探求の努力として描いている。さらに、失われた羊の譬え話は（トマ福107）、最も価値ある最大の羊を探し求める羊飼いの行動を、すべてに優る価値を持つ霊的真理を探究する哲学的努力として提示している。The pursuit of God is an important theme that recurs in the Bible. In the Old Testament, seeking God often involves approaching the altar and asking God for the exercise of His righteous judgments on earth (Psalms 9:11; 27:7-8, etc.). Deuteronomy and Jeremiah, however, suggest that even in exile, it is possible to find God through seeking (Deuteronomy 4:29; Jeremiah 29:13-14a). Furthermore, Ezekiel conveys the hope for returning to the promised land through the parable of the shepherd seeking and bringing back the scattered flock (Ezekiel 34:11-16). In the missionary speeches of the early church, discovering God through seeking is presented as an opportunity available to everyone (Acts 17:27). On the other hand, believers are urged to pray to God constantly, seeking His assistance (Matthew 7:7; Luke 11:9). It is noteworthy that the figure of a shepherd seeking and bringing back his lost sheep serves as a metaphor for God seeking and bringing back a lost sinner in the parable of the lost sheep (Matthew 18:12-14; Luke 15:4-7). In the parables of the Gospel of Thomas, the theme of seeking spiritual truth is predominant (see Thomas 2, 92, 94). Thus, a fisher finding the biggest fish and discarding all the others (Thomas 8) and a merchant finding a pearl and selling all his other possessions (Thomas 76) are praised as being wise, for they symbolize those who seek spiritual truth more than anything else
