Electronic games and english language learning: reports from university students

Abstract

Este trabalho investiga o impacto dos jogos eletrônicos na aprendizagem do inglês como língua estrangeira (LE) a partir dos relatos de 17 estudantes de Letras/Inglês da UFERSA Caraúbas. A pesquisa, realizada por meio de entrevista online, teve como objetivos específicos: (a) analisar como o contato com os jogos eletrônicos influencia a motivação dos alunos para aprender inglês; (b) avaliar o nível de engajamento dos jogadores com base em suas respostas; e (c) investigar o potencial educativo dos jogos no contexto da aquisição do inglês como LE. Os dados obtidos por meio de entrevista foram analisados qualitativamente, de forma interpretativa. Os resultados preliminares indicam que os jogos eletrônicos não apenas promovem maior motivação e engajamento entre os alunos, mas também oferecem um suporte significativo ao desenvolvimento da autonomia e ao aprimoramento da proficiência em inglês. Este estudo reforça a relevância dos jogos eletrônicos como ferramentas educacionais e sugere sua integração mais ampla no ensino de línguas estrangeiras.This study investigates the impact of electronic games on learning English as a foreign language (EFL) through the accounts of 17 English Language students from UFERSA Caraúbas. Conducted via online interviews, the research aims to: (a) analyze how exposure to electronic games influences students' motivation to learn English; (b) assess the level of engagement among players based on their responses; and (c) explore the educational potential of games in the context of EFL acquisition. Qualitative interpretative analysis of the interview data reveals that electronic games not only enhance students' motivation and engagement but also provide significant support for the development of autonomy and improvement in English proficiency. This study underscores the relevance of electronic games as educational tools and advocates for their broader integration in foreign language teaching
