Analisi delle infrastrutture librarie in Italia e lo studio di caso di tre regioni: Piemonte, Lazio e Campania

Abstract

The presence of book infrastructures, such as public libraries, school libraries, and bookshops, represents an essential cultural stronghold to enable the meeting between publishers and readers. There is a growing understanding that these physical spaces are a strategic resource for promoting reading and basic literacy skills. However, the uneven distribution of such infrastructures across the territory creates real ‘book deserts’, areas with strong disparities in access to reading. This study, based on sources from Istat Asia local unit archive, Istat census survey on libraries and other sources from direct and indirect Istat surveys or administrative archives, provides a detailed overview of the presence and distribution of the main book infrastructures in the Italian regions, with a focus on the regions of Piedmont, Lazio and Campania for the year 2022. The analysis aims at comparing the situation in the three regions examined, identifying the factors that most influence the absence of book infrastructures and any differences in the occurrence of this phenomenon. The conclusions of the research are fundamental for evaluating policies and actions to promote books and support reading, both those already planned and those to be promoted in the future.La presenza di infrastrutture del libro, come biblioteche di pubblica lettura, biblioteche scolastiche e librerie, rappresenta un presidio culturale essenziale per favorire l'incontro tra l'offerta editoriale delle case editrici e la domanda di libri da parte dei lettori. È sempre più diffusa l'idea che questi spazi fisici siano una risorsa strategica per la promozione della lettura e delle competenze alfabetiche di base. Tuttavia, la distribuzione non omogenea di tali infrastrutture sul territorio crea dei veri e propri "deserti del libro", aree con forti disparità nell'accesso alla lettura. Questo studio, basato sulle fonti dell'archivio Asia unità locali dell'Istat, l'indagine censuaria Istat sulle biblioteche e altre fonti da indagini dirette e indirette Istat o da archivi amministrativi, offre una panoramica dettagliata della presenza e distribuzione delle principali infrastrutture del libro nelle regioni italiane, con particolare attenzione alle regioni Piemonte, Lazio e Campania per l'anno 2022. L'analisi si propone di confrontare la situazione nelle tre regioni esaminate, individuando i fattori che influenzano maggiormente l'assenza di infrastrutture del libro e le eventuali differenze nel manifestarsi di questo fenomeno. Le conclusioni del lavoro sono fondamentali per valutare le politiche e le azioni di promozione del libro e sostegno alla lettura, sia quelle già programmate che quelle da promuovere in futuro
