A IDEALIZAÇÃO DE UMA LITERATURA NACIONAL POR MEIO DA CRÍTICA LITERÁRIA DE JOSÉ VERÍSSIMO

Abstract

José Veríssimo was an important Brazilian literary critic, from the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, and through his essays and works, he had the role of reshaping the literary criticism made in his century. With its references to the generation of 1870, described as “new generation” by Sílvio Romero, it traces paths for Brazilian education and for national literature, understanding it as an important instrument of social transformation. The literature that Veríssimo conceives is one that represents the country through its Brazilianness. Allied to the effervescent independence movements in the 19th century, the construction of a country independent from Portugal and its references, makes evident to the critic the need to use literature to leverage the national spirit. In this sense, through a struggle for originality and independence, especially from Portugal through a republic, or from the fields of ideas through positivism and evolutionism, a social movement appears in Brazil, with supporters such as Machado de Assis and Tobias Barreto, to, through criticism and education, build a new Brazil.José Veríssimo foi um importante crítico literário brasileiro, do fim do século XIX e começo do século XX, e através de seus ensaios e obras, teve o papel de remodelar a crítica literária feita em seu século. Com suas referencias à geração de 1870, descrita como “geração nova” por Sílvio Romero, traça caminhos para a educação brasileira e para literatura nacional, entendendo-a como importante instrumento de transformação social. A literatura que Veríssimo concebe, é aquela que represente o país através de sua brasilidade. Aliado aos movimentos independentistas efervescentes no século XIX, a construção de um país independente de Portugal e suas referências, torna evidente ao crítico a necessidade de utilizarmos da literatura para alavancar o espírito nacional. Neste sentido, através de uma luta por originalidade e independência, sobretudo de Portugal por meio de uma república, ou dos campos das ideias através do positivismo e evolucionismo, surge no Brasil um movimento social, que figura apoiadores como Machado de Assis e Tobias Barreto, para através da crítica e da educação, construir um novo Brasil
