Abstract
Fretting corrosion has a significant impact on the performance of medical implants but was neglected for a long time. With the appearance of modular implants and the increased number of failed attempts to use them, the need for research and testing arose. In the last 30 years, two standards have been published for testing fretting corrosion of medical implants. One standard is intended for a modular hip implant, while the other is aimed at testing fretting corrosion between the osteosynthesis plate and the screw. While the number of implants and the use of their combinations are increasing, the standards have remained the same. Test engineers use them in modified versions depending on the products they are testing. The aim of this work was to analyse the existing fretting corrosion testing standard, adapt it to test the combination of osteosynthesis plates and the Dall-Miles cable system, and develop suitable test setups. The recommended values of certain testing parameters were taken from the existing standard, while the guidelines for the design of the setup come from the clinically relevant data of products in scope. This document also describes the effects of fretting corrosion on various implants, why they fail and how they can compromise patients’ safety. The scope of discussion on undefined criteria regarding the occurrence of fretting corrosion and how test engineers determine what is acceptable for which products was also extended.Tarna korozija ima značajan utjecaj na učinak medicinskih implantata, a dugo je vremena bila zanemarena. Pojavom modularnih implantata i povećanim brojem njihovih neuspjelih pokušaja korištenja, javila se potreba za opširnijim istraživanjem i testiranjem. U zadnjih 30 godina objavljena su dva standarda za testiranje tarne korozije na medicinskih implantatima. Jedan standard predviđen je za testiranje modularnog implantata kuka, dok je drugi usmjeren na testiranje tarne korozije između osteosintetske pločice i vijka. Dok se broj implantata i korištenje njihovih kombinacija povećavaju, standardi su ostali isti. Testni inženjeri koriste ih u modificiranim verzijama ovisno o proizvodima koje testiraju. Cilj ovog rada bio je analizirati postojeći standard testiranja tarne korozije, modificirati ga za testiranje kombinacije pločice i Dall-Miles kabla i razviti odgovarajuće testne držače. Iz postojećeg standarda preuzete su preporučene vrijednosti parametara testiranja, a prema klinički relevantnim podacima određene su vodilje za razradu dizajna testnog držača. U diplomskom radu opisani su i učinci tarne korozije na ostale implantate, zašto neki nemaju uspješnu primjenu i na koji način mogu ugroziti sigurnost pacijenata. Također je proširena rasprava o nedefiniranim kriterijima po pitanju pojave tarne korozije i na koji način testni inženjeri određuju sto je prihvatljivo za koje proizvode
