Management of physeal and intra-articular fractures in immatured dogs

Abstract

Physeal fractures frequently occur, especially in growing dogs. This is due to the intrinsic characteristics of the physis which make it one of the points with minor resistance to external stresses and, therefore, often the site of fractures. The goal of this preparation is to describe the types of fractures of the physis in growing animals and the surgical techniques applicable to them. A physis in an immature animal has growth potential, this can be altered both by the vascular and traumatic damage of the fracture itself, and by any fracture reduction surgery. The consequences of these injuries may cause deformation of the bone involved; both the methods to prevent these injuries and any surgical techniques to correct them will be taken into consideration
