Impacts of climate change on the wine sector in Italy and mitigation and adaptation strategies.

Abstract

The expected changes in climate are likely to influence the production of main crops. In Italy, one of the main producers of grapes and wine, the growing of vine is at risk. In particular, the climate changes are likely to influence the diffusion of diseases and pests, the use of water resources, and to influence the quantity and quality of productions. The impacts are heterogeneous across regions and call for specific risk management strategies. This chapter reviews the impacts of climate change in selected Italian regions, and the on-farm and off-farm risk management strategies that may help coping with the risks induced by climate changes. It is emphasized the role of crop insurance, which represents not only a mitigation strategy that helps reducing the negative economic consequences of extreme events, but also an adaptation strategy for complementing or substituting other risk management strategies. En Italia, uno de los principales países productores de uva y vino, el cultivo de la vid está en riesgo.
