Virtual local area networks

Abstract

Virtual local networks are a way of logical grouping of users regardless of their physical topology. In fact, end stations in VLANs do not need to be locate on the same LAN segment. VLAN behaves like an idenpendent LAN network. Broadcast packets are flooded only within a VLAN broadcast domain. The standard IEEE 802.1Q defines a system of VLAN tagging for Ethernet frames. Each VLAN has a VLAN ID, number that identifies the VLAN. VLANs are configured on the switches. There are two types of configuration of VLANs: static and dynamic configuration
