An extended tetrathiafulvalene derivative incorporating a thiophene spacer and a fused crown-ether unit has been synthesized. This highly delocalized system exhibits remarkable electrochemical recognition properties for Na+ and Ba2+ as shown by cyclic voltammetry in methylene chloride.
