Abstract

In English, verbs including load and smear can occur in two alternate constructions with essentially the same meaning (the locatum-as-object variant John loaded hay onto the truck / the location-as-object variant John loaded the truck with hay); this phenomenon is known as the locative alternation. It has been pointed out that the location-as-object variant sometimes extends its meaning when used as adjectival passives (e.g. John was loaded with talent). The present paper argues that the combination of location-as-object variants and adjectival passives can be recognized as a distinct construction and that this is a kind of what Matsumoto (1996) calls subjective-change expression.論文 Article
