Area-based Vectorisation for Cartoon Image Coding

Abstract

This paper introduces a novel scheme for converting raster images into vector forms with considerable gains in compression and quality of rendered images. The proposed scheme is particularly designed for vectorisation of cartoon images where the different colour areas are decomposed and individually converted into vector form. The decoding process builds a collage of these areas to reproduce a scalable representation. The paper provides experimental results to illustrate the coding efficiency and quality gains of the proposed system
