Don Diego de Espeloca, curaca of the chichas: interethnic relationships and leadership building in frontier Tarija, 16th. Century

Abstract

Este artículo presenta una serie de episodios que protagonizó don Diego de Espeloca, autoridad de los chichas reducidos en Talina, a partir de la interpretación de documentación inédita del Archivo de Tarija. En un contexto de negociaciones en la frontera de la ciudad fundada en 1574, este curaca logró articular su liderazgo étnico y acrecentarlo hasta convertirse en autoridad principal de los chichas de los tres pueblos de reducción. Al mismo tiempo consolidó las tierras de su grupo y su propio patrimonio. El derrotero de Espeloca permite, además, repensar el complejo fronterizo de Tarija en clave de vínculos interétnicos que modificaron a los agentes que entraron en contacto y al espacio que los contuvo a todos. En este sentido, cobra importancia la presencia de los llamados chiriguanos que impulsó a españoles y chichas a redefinir su accionar.This article presents, through unpublished documents from the Tarija Archive, some episodes related to don Diego de Espeloca, authority of the chicha indians reduced in Talina. Among negotiations in the frontier of that city, this curaca built his ethnic leadership, through to becoming the main authority superseding the three villages which composed the reducción. At the same time, he consolidated the managing of their groups' lands and his own patrimony. The Espeloca case also allows us to rethink the frontier complex (“complejo fronterizo”) in Tarija, particularly regarding ethnic relationships, and the way they were modified by the actors through the contact process. In this sense, the presence of the so called chiriguano indians redefined the actions both of chichas and Spaniards
