Los significados de la paz en Cicerón

Abstract

Cícero has been regarded by the historiographical tradition as a clear representative and advocate of the Roman imperialistic practices of conquest and extorsion. This is true but only to a certain extent. Such a view, together with the stereotypical conception of the pax romana, has prevented the recognition of attitudes in Cícero and others towards peace, conflict resolution, negotiation and defusion which were clearly present amongst citizens, and in the relations of the empire with foreign powers. By studying the uses of the noun pax-pacis, the present paper attempts to shed light on Cicero's thoughts on this issue.Cicerón ha sido considerado por la tradición historiográfica como un claro representante del imperialismo romano, de sus prácticas de conquista y extorsión, lo cual no deja de ser cierto hasta cierto punto. Sin embargo esta calificación, y la compresión estereotipada de la ccpax romana», ha impedido que determinadas actitudes fomentadoras de la paz, la negociación y la regulación pacífica de los conflictos, presentes en las relaciones entre los ciudadanos y las relaciones exteriores del imperio romano, hayan sido reconocidas. Este artículo pretende contribuir a desvelar, a través de los usos de el sustantivo pax-pacis, las ideas que el autor mantiene al respecto
