Determination of misconceptions and conceptual understanding in expressing the quantitative composition of a mixture in chemistry

Abstract

Utvrđivanje miskoncepcija vezanih uz iskazivanje sastava smjese provedeno je u školskoj godini 2018./2019. među 30 učenika sedmog razreda osnovne škole s područja Osječko-baranjske županije, 28 učenika sedmog razreda osnovne škole i 53 učenika prvog razreda srednje škole s područja Brodsko-posavske županije. According to the constructivist approach, the learning process takes place through the student's construction and reconstruction of knowledge. Learning creates new concepts that are linked to previously formed concepts. By linking the concepts together, it is possible to store knowledge well in a long-term memory. While adopting new concepts, students can develop misconceptions. Misconceptions are wrong ideas of concepts that are not in line with valid scientific theories. They occur at all levels of education and often remain after the end of education. Because of their simplicity and intelligibility to students, they are very resistant to change. Detection of the misconceptions related to the expressing the quantitative composition of a mixture was carried out in the school year 2018. /2019. among the 30 students of the seventh grade of elementary school of Osijek-Baranja County, 28 students of the seventh grade of elementary school and 53 first-grade high school students from the Brod-Posavina County. High school students achieved better success in solving the test, although better success at elementary school level achieved elementary school pupils from the Osijek-Baranja County Elementary Schoo
