Craniometric features of wild cat (Felis silvestris Schr.) in Croatia

Abstract

Divlja mačka (Felis silvestris Schr.) je rasprostranjena u gotovo svim lovištima u Republici Hrvatskoj, a kao zaštićena divlja vrsta, u usporedbi s ostalim divljim zvijerima, nedostatno je znanstveno istražena te manje poznata široj javnosti. Kako bi se proširile znanstvene spoznaje o toj zaštićenoj vrsti, rezultati ovog istraživanja dobiveni su mjerenjem različitih primjera jedinki iz različitih dijelova Hrvatske, obuhvatili smo područje Ličko-senjske županije, Vukovarsko-srijemske i Karlovačke županije. U tu svrhu provedena su kraniometrijska mjerenja lubanje divlje mačke, ukupno 20 primjeraka za razdoblje od dvije godina (2015. - 2017.). Svakoj jedinki je s pomičnom mjerkom izmjereno 31 kraniometrijskih izmjera na kostima glave te 8 izmjera na mandibuli. Prikupljeni podatci su na temelju zadanih izmjernih parametara tablično prikazani i rezultat su prvih znanstvenih pokušaja u definiranju osnovnih kraniometrijskih značajki divlje mačke na području Republike Hrvatske.Although widely dispersed throughout hunting grounds in the Republic of Croatia, compared to other wild animals and as a protected wild species (EC Council Directive 43/92), a Wild Cat (Felis silvestris Schr.) is scientifically under researched and less known to the wider public. In order to expand scientific knowledge of this protected species, the results of this study were obtained by measuring different examples of individuals from different parts of Croatia, including the area of Lika-Senj County, Vukovarsko-Srijemska and Karlovac County. Therefore, this research has conducted 20 wild cat skull craniometries for a two-year period (2015 – 2017). Each unit was measured by sliding calipers. Measurement framework entailed 35 craniometric skull bone measures and 10 mandibulis measurements. Based on this measurement framework, collected data is presented in table results, thus representing first scientific attempt to contribute to the definition of basic wild cat characteristics living in the Republic of Croatia
