This paper presents the findings of recent clinical research in hallux limitus/rigidus surgery. Much of the research in this area is particularly descriptive and lacks critique and evaluation. It is paramount that future work should involve randomised multicentre collaborative research projects. These should include a specific standardised protocol with between-centre standardisation of treatment and evaluation of outcome using validated tools. Furthermore, this research should include patient-focused outcomes, standardised assessment criteria and longer surveillance periods
