Librariness: a discussion about the essence of the library in times of change

Abstract

Los intentos de muchos bibliotecarios de transformación y adaptación de sus centros pretenden evitar su obsolescencia, pero despiertan la oposición de amplios sectores de la sociedad y la profesión. Éstos discuten la necesidad y oportunidad de los nuevos servicios, y si estos cambios pervierten el espíritu de la biblioteca. Aunque se reconozca la necesidad de la actualización, se han de tener en consideración estas opiniones. Por ello, la evolución de la biblioteca se debe guiar por la esencia bibliotecaria, por su bibliotecidad, ayudando a la mejora de las personas a través de la información, la educación y la cultura.Librarians have made attempts to transform and adapt libraries in order to avoid obsolescence, but librarians face the opposition of broad sectors of society and the profession. This article discusses the need and opportunity for new services, and considers whether or not changes might pervert the spirit of the library. Even if the need for updating is recognized, these opinions must be taken into account. Therefore, the evolution of the library should be guided by the library’s essence, by its “librariness”, which is helping and improving people through information, education, and culture
