Perbandingan nilai-nilai pendidikan budaya Jawa
dalam novel Para Priyayi karya Umar kayam
dan novel Canting karya Arswendo atmowiloto
(Sebuah Telaah dengan Pendekatan Sosiologi Sastra)
This research is aimed at explaining and revealing: [1] The structure of
Para Priyayi by Umar Kayam and Canting by Arswendo Atmowiloto, [2]
Comparison of the structure Para Priyayi and Canting, [3] Javanese educational
values in the Para Priyayi and Canting, [4] Javanese culture comparison of the
Para Priyayi and Canting.
Method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. This method is used
to explore source of information (data), in the form of literature works, therefore
data collected would be concepts or categories which impossibly could be counted
by statistic. Techniques of collecting data used in this research are: [1] Noninteractive
technique, write documents/archives, [2] comprehending and writing
technique, [3] Literature research technique. Data collected from the source were
analyzed with interactive analysis model, contains of three steps: [1] data
reduction, [2] data description, and [3] summary/verification.
By sociological approach, this research found: [1] elements of the structure
in both novel; such as theme, characters and characterizations, setting, plot, point
of view, and massages; structurally have similarities as well as differences; [2]
Javanese educational values in both novel are easy to be found, and contains
similarities, especially in revealing problems in javanese culture; [3] several
similarities found in both novel, such as: the theme of both novel displayed
Javanese middle-high class family (Priyayi). The difference is that in “Para
Priyayi”, its main character, Sastrodarsono, struggled to achieve higher status for
his family and relatives from low class family to middle-high family (Priyayi),
meanwhile in “Canting”, its main character, Ni, struggled to embrace the
greatness of Javanese culture in the modernization era, symbolized by her effort to
keep Javanese hand printing cloth (batik) existed, as well as her struggle to find
out solution of the uncertainty of the future faced by her employees. Both novels
have similarity in the structural pattern, but relatively opposite in choosing point
of view and setting.
The wider implications of the research in education, in High School or
Junior High are used in Para Priyayi and Canting as the subject of education by
interactive-recreative method. This model encourages students and teachers to
develop their knowledge toward appreciation on literature works in such a way,
by understanding the inside meaning and took positive values from it
