AUGMENTED REALITY IN VIDEO GAMES

Abstract

This paper discusses the elements needed to create an augmented reality game, using a camera as the input device instead of a joystick or mouse, without controlled lighting or a green screen. A camera interface is required, and motion detection and color detection are commonly used. An example application is given that can easily be adapted to a game. The application tracks a rectangle of any solid color, and replaces the rectangle with a prestored image, without requiring a controlled environment or a specialized background, like a green screen. Care must be taken to achieve the registration accuracy and execution speed required to make virtual objects inserted into a real environment believable, but this is achievable with today’s consumer hardware
