Automatic facies classification using convolutional neural network for three-dimensional outcrop data: Application to the outcrop of the mass-transport deposit

    No full text
Recent advancements in three-dimensional (3-D) facies modeling of outcrops have enabled their prompt reconstruction through drone photogrammetry. Such 3-D outcrop models facilitate the understanding of spatial lithofacies distributions and serve as valuable tools for quantitative analysis. Nevertheless, challenges persist in identifying facies within the digital models of large-scale outcrops. To address this issue, this study proposes a method for automatically recognizing outcrop facies, using a convolutional neural network (CNN) model applied to a 3-D point cloud of an outcrop. The process involves constructing a 3-D outcrop point cloud through drone photogrammetry and translating the point cloud into a series of two-dimensional images containing the color and roughness properties of the outcrop surface. The CNN model was trained using manually annotated data sets with five distinct classes: pebbly mudstone, sedimentary block, vegetation, beach, and topsoil. The trained model accurately estimated outcrop facies in unknown test images, with a probability as high as 86.4% in terms of bltn23082i1-score. Furthermore, experimental results revealed that considering roughness information significantly improved lithofacies classification accuracy. Our method was applied to the outcrop of a mass-transport deposit exposed in the Upper Cretaceous to Paleocene Akkeshi Formation along the Esashito coast of Hokkaido Island, northern Japan. The trained CNN model effectively reconstructed the 3-D facies model, which substantially agreed with the actual spatial distribution in visual assessments. This novel approach offers a swift and precise means of reconstructing 3-D facies models even in large-scale or inaccessible outcrops, paving the way for quantitative analyses across diverse regions

<PART2: Community-based Sanitation>Exploring Sanitation Challenges among Indigenous Hunter-Gatherers, Farmers, and Merchants in Cameroon

    No full text
Ensuring proper sanitation remains a critical challenge in rural regions, particularly for Indigenous communities with unique subsistence patterns. In the African rainforests of southeastern Cameroon, this study examined sanitation practices and facilities among hunter-gatherers (Baka), farmers, and merchants. Data were collected through interviews and observations, revealing that Baka hunter-gatherers and farmers often relied on unimproved toilets or designated open defecation areas, while merchants had improved facilities. Even in the absence of formal toilets, the Baka and farming communities maintained fixed defecation sites within settlements. The research also noted aspects of menstrual management within the broader context of health and hygiene. Among Baka women and girls, physical activities differed significantly during menstruation, reflecting a culturally embedded understanding of menstruation's implications on daily life, including hunting and fertility. Unlike many contexts where menstruation is concealed, the Baka openly acknowledged it, integrating this knowledge into their communal practices. These findings highlight the complexity of sanitation challenges and the importance of considering culturally informed behaviors, including menstrual practices. Understanding these dynamics can guide context-sensitive interventions and policies that improve sanitation, health, and dignity for Indigenous communities and other underserved groups

Revolutionary NiCo layered double hydroxide electrodes: Advances, challenges, and future prospects for high-performance supercapacitors

    No full text
The increasing global energy demand and transition to renewable sources emphasize the critical need for advanced energy storage technologies. Supercapacitors, with their high power density, rapid charge/discharge rates, and long cycle life, have emerged as a promising solution. Among various electrode materials, NiCo layered double hydroxides (NiCoLDHs) are particularly notable due to their tunable composition, large surface area, high electrical conductivity, multiple redox states, and exceptional redox activity. This review comprehensively explores the structural and electrochemical properties of NiCoLDHs, highlighting recent advancements in their development as revolutionary electrode materials for supercapacitors. Strategies for enhancing capacitance, such as doping with metals/non-metals, hybridization with carbon materials (e.g., graphene, carbon nanotubes, biomass-derived carbon), and integration with metal oxides, sulfides, selenides, MXenes, MOFs, and conducting polymers, are systematically discussed. Additionally, synthetic methodologies and their impact on electrochemical performance are explored. Current challenges, including scalable synthesis, structural stability, and enhanced energy and power densities, are addressed. Insights from computational modeling and density functional theory provide guidance for optimizing performance at commercial scales. This work provides an overview of advances in NiCoLDHs for next-generation, cost-effective, and sustainable energy storage devices

How do the semantic aspects of information be measured?

    No full text
This study examines methodologies for quantifying the semantic aspects of the concept of information, with a focus on measuring “semantic content” as distinct from “data,” which is commonly addressed in traditional information theory. Conventional measures such as entropy and self-information measure the likelihood of events occurring, and provide valuable insights into the quantity of information. However, they fail to capture the nuances of semantic content, which involves meaning and interpretation, thereby necessitating alternative approaches. Recognizing the multidimensional nature of the information concept, this study aims to bridge the theoretical gaps in current models of semantic information. One influential framework, Floridi's Theory of Strongly Semantic Information (TSSI), quantifies information by considering truth values and semantic discrepancies. This approach successfully aligns with the notion of modeling reality, offering a rigorous foundation for understanding semantic information. Nevertheless, TSSI faces significant limitations. It often fails to calculate instances involving false propositions and lacks consistency in its treatment of true and false cases. These shortcomings restrict its applicability in broader contexts. To address these challenges, this research incorporates Niiniluoto's distance approach, which evaluates the truthlikeness of propositions by measuring their similarity to reality. Unlike TSSI, this method handles both true and false propositions effectively, providing a more comprehensive view of semantic content. This study introduces a novel extension of the distance approach by incorporating agent-specific weighting. This modification allows for adjustments based on individual intentions, interests, or contextual priorities, thus bridging the gap between the mind-independent and mind-dependent properties of information. By integrating these perspectives, the research proposes a more flexible and comprehensive framework for quantifying semantic content. This enriched model not only advances theoretical understanding but also has practical implications for fields where the interaction between data, meaning, and interpretation plays a critical role. Ultimately, this study aims to solidify the foundations for a nuanced theory that captures the multifaceted nature of semantic information in both abstract and applied contexts
