Well-being in Europe: decompositions by country and gender for the population aged 50+. Vienna Yearbook of Population Research|Vienna Yearbook of Population Research 2021|

    No full text
The well-being of older Europeans is of increasing importance given the substantialageing of the population. This paper comprehensively analyses well-being forthe population aged 50+ in 26 European countries, using the newly proposedindicator “Years of Good Life” (YoGL), which measures the remaining yearsof life that an individual can expect to live in a “good” state. The indicatorenables the decomposition of well-being into various dimensions, thereby revealingimportant heterogeneities between regions and genders. Results show that numbersof YoGL at age 50 vary considerably between European countries. They are highestin Northern and Western European countries and lowest in Central and EasternEuropean countries, where many “good” years are lost due to low life satisfaction.Interestingly, the high life expectancy levels in Southern Europe do not translate intohigher numbers of YoGL, mainly due to the low levels of physical and cognitivehealth in this region. While women and men can expect to have similar numbersof YoGL, women are likely to spend a smaller proportion of their longer remaininglifetime in a good state. These results demonstrate the importance of using wellbeingindicators that consider population heterogeneity when measuring humanwell-being, especially for older populations

Continuous time integration for changing type systems. ETNA - Electronic Transactions on Numerical Analysis

We consider variational time integration using continuous Galerkin-Petrov methods applied to evolutionary systems of changing type. We prove optimal-order convergence of the error in a cGP-like norm and conclude the paper with some numerical examples and conclusions

GENERAL ASPECTS The Significance of Developments in Peloponnesian Pottery over the Middle to Late Helladic Transition. Veröffentlichung der Mykenischen Kommission|(Social) Place and Space in Early Mycenaean Greece Mykenische Studien 35|

The Peloponnese is often called the heartland of Mycenaean civilisation, and it is certainly possible to followthe processes involved in Mycenaean development more closely through the archaeological material of the Peloponnesethan through that from any other region of mainland Greece. But the Peloponnese was not a unity in the MiddleHelladic period; its different regions show evidence of distinctive characters, not least in their pottery, and show differingpatterns of contact with the outside world. We might therefore expect them to show differences in their developmenttowards Mycenaean, and there is evidence for this, in the pottery as in other features; but there are also indications ofcloser links between the regions, which helped spread the influence of the increasingly prominent northeast and thedevelopment towards the notably homogeneous pottery tradition of later Mycenaean times. This paper will consider theevidence now available for these developments and the motivation that may lie behind them

Energy from Biomass: Assessing Sustainability by Geoinformation Technology. GI_Forum|GI_Forum 2021, Volume 1|

    No full text
Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target 7.2 requests a substantial increase in the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix by 2030. Renewable energy production in all sectors has to be evaluated for its contribution to reach this target. Biomass for energy production has gained a bad reputation over the past years due to the “food versus fuel” debate or reported unsustainable practices. The BIOPLAT-EU project is employing geoinformation technologies combined with sustainability and economic expertise to more accurately evaluate the sustainability of bioenergy value chains. The project has three main parts: first, the generation of a pan-European map of marginal, underutilized, and contaminated (MUC) lands potentially usable for bioenergy production. This is realized by employing remote sensing time series, existing Copernicus, and other spatial data sets. Second, the generation of a web-based geographical information system (GIS) connecting the MUC lands with other important information sources necessary to assess sustainability. Thisrd, the sustainability assessment includes not only typical social and environmental sustainability indicators like soil, water, or greenhouse gas emissions, but also economic sustainability indicators like employment. Current financial barriers are addressed by integrating innovative financing solutions considering SDG target 12.A

ACHAIA AND ARKADIA The Foundation and Rise to Local Prominence of the Settlement on Mygdalia Hill, near Patras. Veröffentlichung der Mykenischen Kommission|(Social) Place and Space in Early Mycenaean Greece Mykenische Studien 35|

    No full text
The ongoing excavations on the hill of Mygdalia near Patras give us the opportunity of a comprehensivestudy of domestic and tomb material and provide means of understanding early Mycenaean western Achaia. Mygdaliawas founded in the transitional MH III/LH I period and became a local centre in the early Mycenaean period. The settlementwas built on three successive terraces. The lower terrace was supported by a massive enclosure and retaining wallthat seems to be part of the original plan. Substantial architectural remains, including a large building, floor deposits, pottery and metal finds as well as a tholos tomb of LH IIB–IIIA1 date testify to the rise of a local elite. The transition tothe Palatial period was troubled, as witnessed by the abandonment of buildings and the plundering of the tholos tomb

The Past and (Post-COVID) Future of Dual Citizenship. Sitzungsberichte der philosophisch-historischen Klasse|Dual Citizenship and Naturalisation|

    No full text
Dual citizenship was once the bane of states and individuals. Today, a clear majority of states accept the status and it has become commonplace. The shift reflects changes in the nature not only of national identity but also of the individual’s relationship to the state and to the world. States have almost no remaining incentive to police dual citizenship at the same time that individuals often have incentives, sometimes substantial ones, to secure it. This chapter first recounts how dual citizenship came to be normalised. It then considers how the COVID pandemic might impact on dual-citizenship opportunity structures. Although COVID may diminish the instrumental value of dual citizenship for purposes of third-country mobility privileges, it highlights the core benefit of admission rights into the country of additional nationality. Dual citizenship now becomes a kind of global health insurance as well as a way to protect mobility rights, even for those already holding premium passports. For transnational elites, these newly surfaced advantages will magnify incentives to secure investment citizenship. Others will be motivated to avail themselves of ancestral and other forms of strategic citizenship. States, meanwhile, are unlikely to see serious new costs to pre-COVID citizenship practices. Demand for dual citizenship is thus likely to rise while remaining broadly available
