Article in : Journal of QOU for Educational and Psychological Research and Studies ; no. 2570Abstract This study investigated the effect of incorporating the summary strategy on developing students’ reading comprehension. The study was implemented in English Communication 141 course (ENGC) at Birzeit University. The quasi-experimental approach was applied and employed one experimental group (EG) consisting of twenty-seven male and female students and another control group (CG) comprised thirty-two students. A reading comprehension pre-test was administered to determine the participants’ level before the intervention. The experimental group received an eight-week treatment using the summary strategy while the regular method was used to teach the control group. Both groups were taught by the researcher herself to control the variables of the study. A post-test was administered to find whether there was any improvement in the groups’ performance. The results revealed that there was statistically significant difference between the two groups in favor of the experimental group. Gamifying the teaching and learning process in an advanced computer programming course

These days, the conventional ways of teaching programming are not attractive to students. For instance, classical lecture and tutorial classes are not sufficient and provides only one-way learning environment. Most of the students nowadays prefer to have more engaging, fun, competitive, collaborative, and instant feedback learning environment. These elements can be achieved using gamification to increase students’ interest in computer programming courses. More specifically, we used three gamification techniques in one advanced programming course: pair-programming teaching technique to maintain collaboration between students, Kahoot! system to provide an interactive quizzes system and instance feedback, and finally we used Robocode platform to teach Object-Oriented programming concepts in a fun and competitive fashion. We believe that gamifying teaching and learning process has great potential to assist teachers and engage students in a new and challenging way. This paper presents an empirical study that was carried out in one advanced computer-programming course were the mentioned gamification techniques were applied. A subjective system evaluation revealed that the students appreciated the used techniques. The results also revealed that the students’ interest in computer programming were enhanced as well

Development and evaluation of parenteral solution containing florfenicol and flunixin meglumine for veterinary use

An article published in : International Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences Review and Research, 52(2), September-October 2018 ; Article No. 07, Pages: 39-43Parenteral dosage forms are one of the most commonly used pharmaceutical dosage forms in veterinary medicine, at the same time the combination therapy of multiple drug products is a common practice in this field. The aim of this research was to develop a high quality, stable solution that combines Florfenicol and Flunixin meglumine in a multidose injectable dosage form. Different organic solvents were tested to determine the optimal solvent for the active substances in the formulation. Citric acid was used in the formulation to overcome the problem of Flunixin instability and ethyl alcohol was incorporated in the formula in order to enhance syringeability and injectability of the solution. All prepared formulations were evaluated for their chemical and physical stabilities. The candidate formula showed good physical and chemical stability after two weeks of storage at both room temperature and accelerated conditions. Samples from three pilot scale batches were stored at accelerated stability conditions for 6 months and didn’t show any significant physical or chemical instability. Hotspot Identification on Protein Surfaces Using Probe-Based MD Simulations: Successes and Challenges

Molecular Dynamics (MD) based computational co-solvent mapping methods involve the generation of an ensemble of MD-sampled target protein conformations and using selected small molecule fragments to identify and characterize binding sites on the surface of a target protein. This approach incorporates atomic-level solvation effects and protein mobility. It has shown great promise in the identification of conventional competitive and allosteric binding sites. It is also currently emerging as a useful tool in the early stages of drug discovery. This review summarizes efforts as well as discusses some methodological advances and challenges in binding site identification process through these co-solvent mapping methods

The impact of urban transformation on the Landscape in Kufur’ Aqab - Palestine

مقال نشر في مجلة : International Journal of Planning, Urban and Sustainable Development, vol. 5, no. 1, 2018 , p. 68-77هدفت الدراسة إلى فحص تغيرات المشهد في كفر عقب، من خلال وجهه نظر السكان من ناحية الوعي ،2010 ،2008 ،1991( السنوات خلال ً ومكانيا والإدراك بالمشهد الحالي والتغير الحاصل عليه زمانيا 2012 ،)حيث تم استخدام التغيرات في المساحات الأرضية كدليل ملموس قابل للقياس لهذه التغيرات من خلال المنهج التحليلي الحيزي والكمي والمنهج المقارن ،وباستخدام برنامج نظم المعلومات الجغرافية )GIS ،)وتحليل الصور الجوية، اضافة الى استخدام الاستبيانات والمقابلات، لتوضيح أثر التحول الحضري من بيئة عمرانية وزيادة سكانية على هذه التغيرات الحاصلة في المشهد. توصلت الدراسة إلى أن هناك زيادة في مناطق البناء الفلسطيني منذ عام 1991 من 9.0.2 دونم الى 1060 دونم عام 2012( تغيرت من 6.9 %الى 1.19%من مساحة الأرض الكلية على التوالي(. كما زادت مناطق الاستيطان الإسرائيلي من عام 1991 وحتى 2012 من مساحة قدرها 2.202 دونم إلى 619 دونم من مساحة ً الأرض الكلية حيث تشكل نسبة الزيادة بحوالي 12 %من مساحة الأرض الكلية. وأظهرت أن النتائج أيضا تناقص المناطق الزراعية ذات المشهد الجمالي كان الأكبر من ضمن الاستخدامات الأخرى حيث تناقص هذا العنصر المشهدي من 8.1208 إلى 6.286 دونم من 1991 الى 2012 وبنسبة مقدارها 1.11 .%وكذلك الأمر بالنسبة لمناطق الأعشاب الطبيعية حيث تناقصت من 0200 دونم إلى 2921 دونم ، مما يشير الى التغير السلبي في المشاهد الطبيعية الجميلة في منطقة الدراسة. كما وجدت الدراسة درجة مرتفعة من الوعي السكاني حول التغير الحاصل في المشهد من خلال الأنشطة البشرية المختلفة التي أثرت على المشهد بشكل سلبي. الكلمات المفتاحية: التحول الحضري، ، المشهد الطبيعي، المشهد الثقافي، التغير في استخدامات الأراضي، الوعي السكاني، تغير المشهد

Automatic generation of Android SQLite database components

Mobile applications (apps) are becoming ubiquitous and at the same time getting more complex to develop. Specific development tools and techniques are always essential to facilitate the development of reliable and cost effective mobile apps. However, a large fraction of Android app developers are known to be novice and come from non-computing background. To assist developers, this paper addresses the problem of automatic generation of Android database components, and presents a technique for creating SQLite database and APIs. The technique is based on a tool named Android SQLite Creator (ASQLC) that can automatically generate Android SQLite database as well as the API classes that perform read/write operation on that database. To evaluate the tool, a preliminary experiment was conducted by junior computer science students in building a small size Android database. This preliminary evaluation shows that our tool can be usable and promising particularly for novice developers

Factor V Leiden G1691A and prothrombin G20210A mutations among Palestinian patients with sickle cell disease

Background: Vascular thrombosis is an important pathophysiological aspect of sickle cell disease (SCD). This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and clinical impact of factor V Leiden G1691A (FVL) and prothrombin G20210A mutations among Palestinian sickle cell disease (SCD) patients. Methods: A total of 117 SCD patients, including 59 patients with sickle cell anemia (SS), 33 patients with sickle β-thalassemia and 25 individuals with sickle cell trait (AS) were studied. The control group consisted of 118 healthy individuals. FVL and prothrombin G20210A mutations were determined by RFLP PCR. Results: Analysis of the clinical history of SCD patients revealed that seven patients have had vascular complications such as ischemic stroke or deep vein thrombosis. In SCD patients, the inheritance of the FVL mutation showed a significantly higher incidence of pain in joints, chest and abdomen as well as regular dependence on blood transfusion compared to SCD with the wild type. Age- and sex-adjusted logistic regression analysis revealed a significant association between FVL and sickle cell anemia with an odds ratio (OR) of 5.6 (95% confidence intervals [CI] of 1.91–39.4, P = 0.039) in SS patients. However, increased prevalence of the FVL in AS subjects and sickle β-thalassemia patients was not statistically significant compared to controls (OR 3.97, 95% CI 0.51–28.6, P = 0.17 and OR 3.59, 95% CI 0.35–41.6, P = 0.26, respectively). The distribution of prothrombin G20210A mutation among SCD patients compared to controls was not significantly different, thus our findings do not support an association of this mutation with SCD. Conclusions: FVL was more prevalent among SS patients compared to controls and it was associated with higher incidence of disease complications among SCD patients
