    Theology as Reacting Role-Play

    Get PDF
THL226 Old Testament students engage in a 2.5 week role-playing game centered around the reform of King Josiah from 2 Kings 22 - 23. Students play out specific characters from the reform priests, prophets, royal courtiers, merchants, soldiers, and other in debating and voting on the measures under consideration in 622 BCE Judah. By writing position papers, giving speeches, and collaborating with other “faction” members, students persuade their peers to act and vote according to mutual objectives. Students take on leadership roles in the classroom, exercise political muscles, and pore over course content with a new motivation to win the game

Analogy of Disjunction: John Duns Scotus vs. Hervaeus Natalis on the Univocity or Analogy of Being

    No full text
At the beginning of his influential De Nominum Analogia, Thomas de Vio Cajetan (1469–1534) mentions three mistaken positions on analogy. He does not attach names to these positions, but each one was held by distinguished Thomists of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Furthermore, their proponents were responding to the same set of challenges from John Duns Scotus that set the agenda for the De Nominum Analogia. In this paper, I would like to do something that Cajetan did not do, and that is, directly consider the merits of the first position in his list of mistaken accounts of analogy; namely, the position that analogy is constituted by (in)disjunction. More specifically, this paper investigates the polemical use for which Hervaeus Natalis (1260–1323) deployed analogy of disjunction; the reply of John Duns Scotus; and the implications of this back and forth for understanding the Thomist-Scotist dispute over the concept of being

Writing Stories of Gifts, Talents, and Passions: Narrative as a Way to Disrupt Deficit Perspectives

    Get PDF
The students in the Fall 2019 ENG 210 Public Action Writing collaborated with The Learning Tree to study desire-frameworks and asset-based community development practices. Students then documented the gifts, talents, and passions of residents in the Near Northwest Area. Over the semester, students and residents wrote collaboratively to create several projects that challenge stereotypes commonly associated with urban areas. This poster will showcase the resulting projects, share student and resident perspectives, and describe asset orientations

Implementation and Evaluation of a Checklist in the Postanesthesia Care Transitions

    Get PDF
The transition from the operating room to the postoperative care unit is a critical time in the perioperative period for patients. Patients are physically transferred from one location to another and critical information regarding patients’ intraoperative period must be delivered accurately to ensure patient safety. Over the past few years, many healthcare regulating agencies have advocated for a standardized care transitions by suggesting a handoff checklist should be implemented but this has failed to be universally executed. There is not one template universally implemented in post anesthesia standardized handoffs but many different models. Nonetheless, research has shown using a standardized template for this care transition has shown that more information was delivered to the receiving parties and safety events related to miscommunication in postoperative transitions were decreased. The purpose of this project is to refine care transitions through a standardized handoff which will improve communication and decrease safety-related events. Nurses and anesthesiologists were anonymously surveyed about their perception of postanesthesia transitions prior to and after introduction of the intervention. A postanesthesia handoff checklist formatted in a Situation, Background, Assessment, and Recommendation method was implemented at a level one trauma center in the Midwest based on feedback from the organization. The documented handoffs indicated there was a high compliance with using the checklist. The postsurveys presented low participation and neutral feelings regarding the use of a handoff checklist

Building STEM Equity and Identity in the Community

    Get PDF
Numerous obstacles contribute to the underrepresentation of racial, ethnic, and gender groups in science and technology fields. However, addressing these barriers is complex and multifactorial. As part of their exploration of intersectionality and leadership, seniors in biology investigated different factors that initiate and sustain interest and engagement in STEM fields. They applied this knowledge by re-envisioning classroom activities and resources to align with best practices that encourage the development of STEM identity in underrepresented groups. These activities are being compiled into a resource handbook for Indianapolis-area teachers and will be part of an ongoing service outreach project for biology undergraduates

The Role of CBX5 in Head and Neck Cancer Cell Phenotypic Expression

    Get PDF
•Head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCCs) have remained one of the common and lethal cancers around the world. •HNSCC rapidly spread via the lymphatics system, leading to a higher percentage of initial late-stage diagnoses and poor prognoses for patients. •CBX5 is downregulated highly metastatic breast cancers and may repress metastatic phenotypes •It is unclear what role is may have in HNSCC, or which specific functions of CBX5 drive its antimetastatic role. •We aim to map molecular changes to phenotypic expression in order to provide better diagnostic prognoses for different HNSCC cell types as well as possible pharmacologic targets for treatment

Integration of Virtual Microscopy Podcasts in Histology Discipline in Osteopathic Medical School: Learning Outcomes

    Get PDF
The study evaluates the outcome of integrating narrative podcasts of virtual Histology Slides into teaching Histology discipline to the medical students at Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine. Short recordings of digital microscopic slides were created as supplementary resources of Histology. A voluntary and anonymous survey was obtained from the classes 2020, 2021 and 2022 using a Likert-scale based questionnaire regarding the students’ perception of the virtual microscopy podcasts. A summary of students’ feedback and academic performance will help us understand the significance of integrating multimedia with Histology teaching. The study will also facilitate planning a curricular modification when needed
