Variation in Intrinsic Calling Strategy With Morphology in the Túngara Frog

When signaling to attract mates, males balance competition with energetic investment and predation risk. Modeling signaling behavior is complicated by social stimulation at the chorus, which masks intrinsic calling strategy. This study examines intrinsic calling behavior using laboratory-raised túngara frogs in the absence of social stimuli. Male frogs were placed individually in sound-attenuating call boxes, where their vocalizations were recorded continuously over periods of 24–72 hours. We analyzed how males distributed calling effort over multiple acoustic dimensions and screened for effects of body mass, snout-vent length (SVL), and age on call parameters such as duration, call rate, dominant frequency, signal amplitude, and complexity. Preliminary analyses indicate that calling occurred throughout the day but was concentrated approximately 2 hours after sunset. Despite large changes in call abundance over the night, mean call properties varied only modestly, with frequency showing the least variation. Correlation analyses further indicate that hourly call production was negatively associated with period and positively associated with duration, while amplitude was positively correlated with duration and period was negatively correlated with both amplitude and duration. These results provide the basis for a model of male calling that will facilitate tests of hypotheses about signaling strategies and improve our understanding of mating behavior in vertebrates

San Joaquin Emergency Foodbank College Corps Resource

At the San Joaquin Emergency Food Bank, we gathered different resources from all across Stockton and the San Joaquin Area. These resources are often missed by our clients due to transportation, scheduling, or even awareness issues. This project addresses the issue and makes an effort to keep job security stable and reduce some of the major social and economic problems. By having a clear image and layout of all of the resources available to the residents of Stockton and San Joaquin County are able to live a bit more comfortably knowing they have something to fall back on. The first step to any problem is bringing awareness to it. Once people know the tools they have to work with, they can start to better their situations and even share with the community in order to bring purpose to these amazing organizations

Little Manila Rising: Youth Programs

This service project created a video aimed to help the Little Manila Rising Youth Programs team to visually showcase their history and programming. Little Manila Rising (LMR) was founded in Stockton CA, aiming to help connect the Filipino community and fight for the historical preservation of the Little Manila historic site. LMR aspired to continue advocacy and historic preservation for generations, and began by creating programs to educate youth about Stockton’s systemic issues.  Through interviews, staff expound on current day programming and Youth on their first-hand experience being a part of an organization focused on creating a difference in the community. The video is solely narrated by those involved in the program, and will be presented and used for future outreach and welcome events, such as high school presentations and community workshops; and encourage interested Stockton youth to attend our events
