Municipal Solid Waste Reduction Through Food Waste Diversion and Recycling Initiatives

    No full text
The report evaluates how Massachusetts municipalities are working toward the goals set in the MassDEP 2030 Solid Waste Master Plan, focusing on waste reduction, recycling initiatives, and especially food waste diversion. It identifies barriers, highlights successes, and makes policy recommendations, drawing on statewide and local examples. Primary methods include a literature review of articles covering the challenges municipalities face in waste reduction and some successful approaches. However, there is a literature gap regarding the impact of local staffing and implementation of waste reduction strategies. Data and case examples from Massachusetts are used to illustrate the benefits of dedicated staffing for waste reduction programs at the local level. The report finds that while local dedicated staff can improve a municipality’s fulfillment of state mandates and waste reduction goals, very few communities have dedicated staff, creating a gap in their abilities to follow the state’s mandates. The author recommends steps for municipalities to take to better position themselves to meet the state’s goals. The author also recommends that the state should create better incentives, specifically to help municipalities create dedicated positions for waste reduction programs, and that the state should enhance statewide enforcement mechanisms related to compliance with its waste reduction related mandates

Elizabeth Blake, PhD: Modernist Poetics and Queer Fruit

    No full text
Forbidden fruit has long been a convenient metaphor for illicit knowledge and sexuality, a trope easily traced to the garden of Eden. Modernist poets deployed this familiar figure in new ways, insisting on the fleshy materiality of fruit as a way of representing other forms of fleshly pleasure. In her recent book, Edible Arrangements: Modernism’s Queer Forms, Clark University professor Elizabeth Blake examines this phenomenon as part of a larger exploration of the ways queer consumption restructures modernist literary forms. In this talk, Blake focuses on T. S. Eliot’s “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” and H. D.’s “Priapus” to discuss the way modernist poets disrupt lyric traditions by setting intertextuality and phenomenological referentiality in tension in order to explore queer experience

Men\u27s victimization from women partners and their help seeking: An example from Uganda

    No full text
There is a growing interest among researchers in examining the experiences of men who have sustained intimate partner violence (IPV) victimization. However, relatively less attention has been given to African men who have been victimized by women partners. Emerging research suggests that IPV is a problem for this group and that contrary to public perception, women do perpetrate IPV against their male partners. This chapter takes the example of Ugandan men and presents a discussion of their experiences with IPV. Ugandan men report enduring verbal abuse and physical violence from their partners, with verbal abuse being the most commonly reported. These experiences are associated with feelings of shame and powerlessness for men, who tend to cope in unhealthy ways, such as through substance abuse. Like other African men who have been victimized, Ugandan men may also cope through finding comfort in religion. They are often reluctant to disclose their victimization or to seek support due to fear of being shamed for deviating from societal expectations related to masculinity. Additionally, there are structural barriers to Ugandan men\u27s help seeking, such as limited resources in place to support men who have sustained IPV. Recommendations for future research and policy are discussed
