Applicazione di modelli matematici alla dispersione di\ud uova e larve di piccoli pelagici nello Stretto di Sicilia\ud
The anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) belongs to the Clupeidi family; it is a pelagic species with short life cycle and one of the major fish stocks in some areas of the Mediterranean.\ud
In recent years there have been attempts at trying to understand what the environmental factors influencing the life cycle of pelagic species such as the anchovies may be, and how these factors may act. The environment has an essential role in the success of recruitment of small pelagic species. Garcia Lafuente et al. (2005) have shown how the anchovies’ strategy of spawning in the Strait of Sicily is closely linked to the variability of hydrographic elements such as upwelling (both permanent and wind-induced), fronts, avvettive currents, rivers' deltas.\ud
Given the key role played by the hidrography in the environmental scenario of the anchovy, attempts have been made at determining its contribution to the dispersion, transport and retention of deposition products. Lafuente et al. (2002) formulated a theoretical model of transport of the deposition products from the spawning to the nursery areas and the Strait of Sicily. The model indicates the influence of the AIS (which characterizes the surface circulation in the Sicily Channel) route on the transport of the deposition products. This influence is also highlighted by the different distribution of areas of deposition over the years in relation to the different trajectories followed by the AIS. Drawing upon maps of distribution of eggs and larvae in the Channel of Sicily, maps of the geostrofic current and maps of the wind-induced surface current (ageostrofic component) due to wind speed and direction, in this thesis a dispersion model of the deposition products was implemented in order to determine the possible trajectories. In this context, the GNOME model -developed by the NOAA for the calculation of the trajectories of dispersed oil particles following a\ud
hypothetical spill at sea - was used. By comparing the maps of distribution of larvae with the trajectories followed by the eggs from the spawning sites the validity of the abovementioned theoretical model and the assumptions on the influence exerted by surface circulation on the distribution of nursery areas have been verified. The possible use of the results of this study for an\ud
oceanographic campaign in the Channel of Sicily and the use of a forecast movement model (POM) as an input to the model of dispersion were also suggested.\u
Comparison of rain gauge observations with modeled precipitation over Cyprus using Contiguous Rain Area analysis
Verification of modeled rainfall with precipitation\ud
observed by a rain gauge network has been performed in a\ud
case study over the Cyprus Island. Cyprus has a relatively\ud
dense rain gauge network. The applied verification method is\ud
the Contiguous Rain Area (CRA) analysis. Some drawbacks\ud
of the CRA method are pointed out when it is applied to such\ud
a case study. Impact on the CRA results, when considering\ud
different dimensions of the verification sub-domain and different types of indicators (correlation and mean square error) used in the comparison, are discussed. Results indicate thatcare should be taken when verification of modeled rainfall is performed over a domain smaller than the model one

INDIA’S HOSTILITY TO INTERNATIONALIZE CRIMINAL\ud JUSTICE- CALCULATIVE STRATEGY OR PREJUDICED\ud RELUCTANCE?
On May 31, 2013 United Nations urged India to institute a commission of inquiryserving\ud
as a transnational justice mechanism, into extra-judicial killings in its North-eastern\ud
states. Urging India to repeal the controversial Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1958,\ud
United Nations also asked India to ensure that the legislation regarding the use of force by the\ud
armed forces provides for the respect of the principles of proportionality and necessity.\ud
Various reports have shown that the State violence in Kashmir and North Eastern States of\ud
India was institutionalized through a culture of institutional impunity to the state forces which\ud
perpetuate the state of human rights violations. India has not acceded to the Rome Statute. It\ud
abstained in the vote adopting the statute in 1998, saying it objected to the broad definition\ud
adopted of crimes against humanity, the right given to the Security Council to refer cases,\ud
delay investigations and bind non-State Parties, and the use of nuclear weapons or other\ud
weapons of mass destruction not being explicitly outlawed. Even though, India has ratified the\ud
Geneva Conventions, it has decided to overlook Common Article 3. In light of the above, this\ud
paper highlights why the emerging power India, abstains from joining the Rome Statute and\ud
the possibility of India being brought under the scanner of International Criminal Court
