Supporting children’s active and independent mobility in cities, creating walkable and car-free spaces, reducing and slowing down traffic are considered among the basic steps in creating child-friendly environments as they support children’s physical and mental well-being. This study explores children’s mobility in a car-free space to understand the effects of independent mobility on the perception of space. Büyükada in Istanbul defines a unique alternative due to its car-free living environment and offers a child-friendly environment and a significant potential to support freedom of movement. In this context, using ‘mind mapping’ methodology, a recognized visual thinking tool for structuring abstract thoughts, children’s spatial perceptions and freedom of movement were explored through the drawn and written expressions of 20 10-year-old students living and studying in Büyükada. The paper discusses the findings of the fieldwork in this car-free settlement on children’s active and independent mobility patterns and their promising potential for developing child-friendly urban policies. The findings show that living in a car-free environment enables children to have independent mobility, enabling them to connect with nature and the urban space in which they live and to develop socio-spatial ties with the communit

Zeynep'in varlığını görmek bizi yatıştırıyor. Her şeye merakla bakıyoruz, her şeyin üzerinde konuşuyoruz, bazen gördüklerimizi anılarımızla bağdaştırıyoruz. Zeynep, hocaya benziyor. Zeynep'in onayından geçen sayfaları belirliyoruz. Cümlelerini seçiyoruz ve GA'nın Aklında Bir Seyir masasının temelini atıyoruz

    No full text
This study presents antimony oxide nanoparticles (AO-NPs)-based dispersive solid phase extraction (DSPE) method for the determination of copper ions in lavender tea matrices with high sensitivity and accuracy at trace levels by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) system. AO-NPs used as sorbent material were produced by microwave-assisted synthesis method by setting a defined temperature program. Limit of detection (LOD) value was calculated as 0.41 μg L−1 under optimal operating conditions. Linearity was obtained in the range of 2.5–40 μg L−1. Increase in detection power/sensitivity were calculated based on LOD values of FAAS and AO-NP-DSPE-FAAS systems and the slopes of the calibration plot equations and were found to be 169.4 and 123.1, respectively. The recovery results in lavender tea matrices recorded in the range of 103 %–118.2 % by employing the matrix matching calibration strategy indicated that the presented method is feasible for lavender tea and similar matrices

Interiors that draw: the in-between spaces for the sake of the experimental

    Get PDF
The gap between representation and embodied experimentation in contemporary design practices has distanced the design process from lived experience, while also opening new possibilities for experimental engagement through drawing. This gap has been explored through representational works–such as paper or visionary architecture–as well as through installations, performances, and happenings. Although these categories (“the experiment in the space of drawing” and “the experiment in bodily space”) differ significantly, they share fundamental qualities, such as being research- and criticism-focused and having an interdisciplinary nature, which are also common in Armstrong’s research on “experimental architecture.” Following a review of the literature on representation and embodied experience, this paper examines the concept of the "experimental interior" through the juxtaposition of drawing and installation art–both of which generate knowledge through experimentation and their unique spatiality. These practices are theorized as ways to transcend limited definitions of drawing and interior–conventionally confined to mental-material and interior-exterior binaries–by proposing them as “interiors that draw.” Such interiors are framed, in Armstrongian terms, as “wicked experiments” that address uncertainty, the unknown, and complexity through materially engaged, speculative designerly ways. By focusing on experimental interiors through “interiors that draw” as wicked experiments in interdisciplinary artistic research, this paper aims to highlight their capacity to foster agile designerly approaches. © 2025 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group

Determination of Aging Parameters and Following Structure Changes in Red Oil Paints: A Comprehensive Study

    No full text
Oilpaintings occupy a prominent place in cultural heritage. However, inconvenient conservation conditions (humidity, heat, and light exposure) accelerate the aging of paintings, leading to the rapid deterioration of their originality and physical durability. In this study, the mock-up samples prepared on canvas with the ten highly preferred red oil paint types were artificially aged via UV ray exposure, and changes in paint structures were examined in detail. Before the UV accelerated aging process, prepared samples were kept in a drawer for one year without any treatment. Naturally aged samples were exposed to UV rays for 24 h, 240 h, and 720 h in the laboratory where the relative humidity (60 %) and temperature (35 °C) remained constant. The increased exposure time to UV radiation, temperature, and relative humidity caused dramatic changes in Vermilion Red, Azo Red Light, Alizarin Crimson-326, and Cadmium Red Orange mock-ups. Changes in the chemical structure of paints were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Elemental composition and pigments of paints were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) and Raman spectroscopy, respectively. The morphological and textural differentiations were analyzed with the help of SEM in addition to stereo and optical microscopes. The CIEL*a*b* color values of the paints were detected via the spectrophotometric method. Microscopic images of the four paints with excessive CIEL*a*b* color measurements displayed significant cracks and splits, and the changes in their chemical structures were examined by FTIR. Degradation was observed in organic dyes containing azo and quinone groups, which absorb UV rays rapidly and are adversely affected by temperature, and in photosensitive inorganic paints Vermilion Red and Cadmium Red Orange. © 2025 Elsevier B.V

Shear Wave Velocity Prediction with Hyperparameter Optimization

    Get PDF
Shear wave velocity (Vs) is an important soil parameter to be known for earthquake-resistant structural design and an important parameter for determining the dynamic properties of soils such as modulus of elasticity and shear modulus. Different Vs measurement methods are available. However, these methods, which are costly and labor intensive, have led to the search for new methods for determining the Vs. This study aims to predict shear wave velocity (Vs (m/s)) using depth (m), cone resistance (qc) (MPa), sleeve friction (fs) (kPa), pore water pressure (u2) (kPa), N, and unit weight (kN/m3). Since shear wave velocity varies with depth, regression studies were performed at depths up to 30 m in this study. The dataset used in this study is an open-source dataset, and the soil data are from the Taipei Basin. This dataset was extracted, and a 494-line dataset was created. In this study, using HyperNetExplorer 2024V1, Vs prediction based on depth (m), cone resistance (qc) (MPa), shell friction (fs), pore water pressure (u2) (kPa), N, and unit weight (kN/m3) values could be performed with satisfactory results (R2 = 0.78, MSE = 596.43). Satisfactory results were obtained in this study, in which Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) models were also used. © 2025 by the authors

    Local non-abelian class field theory

    Get PDF
The “local class field theory”, which can be defined as the description of the extensions of a given local field K with finite residue field of q = pf elements in terms of the algebraic and analytic objects depending only on the base K is one of the central problems of modern number theory. The theory developed for the abelian extensions, around the fundamental works of Artin and Hasse in the first quarter of the 20th century. It is natural to ask if one could construct this theory including the non-abelian extensions of the base field. There are two approches to this problem. One approach is based on the ideas of Langlands, and the other on Koch. Koch’s method was later generalized by Fesenko and Koch-de Shalit for specific type of non-abelian extensions of the base field. Laubie extended Koch-de Shalit’s work and constructed a local non-abelian class field theory for K. On the other hand, İkeda and Serbest extended Fesenko’s works to construct a non-abelian local class field theory for K, containing a pth root of unity. In this study, we extended İkeda-Serbest’s construction of the local reciprocity map for K containing a pth root of unity to any local field. Also we have shown that the extended map satisfies the certain functoriality and ramification theoretic properties. © 2025, Hacettepe University. All rights reserved
