The Road to Electric Vehicle Supremacy : China's Strategic Ascent and Its Global Implications
Between 2020 and 2023, China surged from being the fifth-largest to the largest exporter of passenger cars, including electric vehicles (EVs). This paper examines the factors behind China’s rapid rise in the global EV market, arguing that while state subsidies provided local producers with cost advantages, they are not the sole drivers of China’s dominance. Strategic investments in critical mineral supply chains, refining, and battery production, alongside intense domestic competition, have also played a significant role. The paper explores the implications of China’s rise for the global automotive industry, particularly for Western economies. While trade tensions and tariffs aimed at countering China's market practices have arisen, these may not significantly hinder China's progress. Instead, the paper highlights the potential opportunities for automakers in Japan and other Western nations, who must adapt to stay competitive and explore new partnerships in the evolving market.departmental bulletin pape
A Comparative Analysis of End-of-Life Care for Older Adults in East Asia, the U.S. and Europe : With a Particular Focus on Family Involvement, Advance Directives and ACP
This article addresses the urgent challenges of an ageing population and rising dementia rates in East Asia, focusing on Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Singapore. It highlights the need for proactive measures due to increased deaths, declining birth rates, increasing single-living elderly, and weakening familial bonds. The question is how law and policy can respond to these challenges to ensure fulfilling end-of-life care for older adults. The article compares social characteristics and law and policy strategies from the U.S., Europe, and East Asia, noting the prevalence of family involvement in East Asia. It calls for a balance between respecting individual autonomy and societal values. Inspired by the European Law Institute, it proposes the project for “Advance Decision-Making for Future Disability in the East Asian Context" for comprehensive research. The article examines the social and legal influences on advance directives (ADs) and advance care planning (ACP). It suggests that each country should be respected in its unique traits. It argues for integrating healthcare and asset management, legal and practical approaches, and individual and relational autonomy. The proposed East Asian model for advance decision-making aims to promote a supportive approach to ADs and ACP, guided by principles of human rights, diversity, and mutual benefit.departmental bulletin pape
TOKIWA Forest of Yokohama National University Road to Registration as an OECM
departmental bulletin pape
Direct Physical Vapor Deposition of Liquid Metal on Treated Metal Surface
Liquid metal has garnered significant interest as a potential stretchable wiring material for next-generation stretchable electronics. The operation of substrates within these electronics necessitates adherence to three primary criteria for the wiring of electronic substrates to facilitate the integration of stretchable circuits in society. First, the wiring’s top surface must remain exposed to allow for the straightforward attachment of electronic components following the wiring fabrication. Second, the design of the wiring pattern should not be subject to significant constraints. Third, the substrate’s top surface needs to be clean and devoid of excess conductive material to mitigate the risk of unintended short-circuits. Previous studies have not introduced a liquid metal patterning method that meets all of these criteria. Physical vapor deposition (PVD) is commonly employed for depositing hard metals on nonstretchable substrates such as silicon and glass. However, when subjected to direct PVD, liquid metal forms independent nanoparticles, losing conductivity due to its exceptionally high surface tension and the presence of surface oxide films. Consequently, the direct deposition of liquid metals without subsequent physical stimulation, such as the application of pressure, has been deemed challenging. In our study, we enhanced the substrate surface’s wettability by treating it with copper chloride, thereby facilitating the direct deposition of liquid metals onto the substrate surface. The oxide film on the liquid metal’s surface is disrupted upon contact with the copper chloride-treated substrate, enabling the nanoparticles to coalesce and establish electrical connectivity, thereby preserving conductivity even when stretched. The resultant stretchable wiring exhibited a fine line width of approximately 50 μm and a thin film thickness of approximately 1 μm, ensuring a robust bond with the substrate surface. Consequently, this wiring technique supports diverse patterning designs when combined with processing methods such as photolithography.journal articl
