Matter that Bodies: Philosophy in the Age of a Complex Materialism
If there is one formula that has characterized most of poststructuralism|cultural studies it has been the formula \u27always already.\u27 Its Freudian logic [Nachträglichkeit] has been a favourite of writers as diverse as Lacan, Derrida, Baudrillard, Butler or Bhabha. Often unspoken, but therefore all the more powerful, has been the qualification \u27text|discourse|culture. Most branches of gender studies, especially those that operate at the interface between poststructuralism and cultural studies, have embraced this logic, which has caused many crucial insights into the logic of cultural productions and positionings. In the last years, however, a number of scholars, many coming from within gender studies themselves, have noted a certain blindness in and of this logic
Gender, Race, and Internal Colonization: An Asian Americanist Review of Traise Yamamoto\u27s "Masking Selves, Making Subjects: Japanese American Women, Identity, and the Body"
In Asian American studies, it generally is presumed that what binds an otherwise extremely heterogeneous minority population is its historical, legal exclusion from the American body politic. In the nation\u27s imaginary and laws, Asian Americans\u27 claim to citizenship is a fragile thing-something abjured, withheld, and forged most dramatically during national crises. Traise Yamamoto\u27s Masking Selves, Making Subjects: Japanese American Women, Identity, and the Body underscores the continued necessity for Asian Americans to claim America, a nation that incarcerated Americans of Japanese descent during World War II. That juridical vulnerability has particularly harmful repercussions for Asian American women, whose subjectivities and struggles against patriarchy, nativism, and racism are structurally circumscribed by what the Black feminist theorist Deborah King calls "multiple jeopardy." Yamamoto\u27s study is an exceptionally eloquent example of an Asian Americanist contribution to the critical race feminism movement in the U.S
Based on an analysis of relevant high-profile psychological studies the „Pop- Up-Ikonogramm“ has been developed as a concept for a multi-media format of specific mathematical content. This concept was tested empirically in reference to its effectiveness for learning of mathematical propositions and proofs. Compared to the classical versions of media formats the „Pop-Up-Ikonogramm“ proves to be significantly superior in regard to the mathematical reproduction efficiency
Gender Meets Race: Andy Tennant’s Anna and the King (1999) and Walter Lang\u27s The King and I (1956)
Both Tennant\u27s Anna and the King and Lang\u27s The King and I stage the prohibition of physical contact between the \u27white woman\u27 and the \u27yellow king\u27; they employ stark oppositions and attempt to contain hybridity. Nevertheless, the clear-cut binarisms are imploded in both films. This is partly due to the films\u27 thwarting of cultural inscriptions of race and gender [...]. Ironically, the 1999 version - and this is my thesis - turns out to be more racist than the original version from 1956 as Tennant\u27s remake adheres to imperialist ideas even more intransigently than Lang\u27s film
We show how to use cryptography in school to find subjects for papers written by pupils. By emphasizing the mathematical impact in cryptography we vote for dealing with number theory in high school
The paper offers two pragmatical models for the furtherance of mathematically interested and especially gifted children in grades 2–4. A discussion of useful tasks and possible solutions follows, also a description of demands and requirements for tutors of such mixed groups is added, related to the special characteristics of these children
Identification of Surface Water Storing Sites Using Topographic Wetness Index (TWI) and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI)
Ethiopia is endowed with water and has a high runoff generation area compared to many countries, but the total stored water only goes up to approximately 36BCM. The problem of water shortage in Ethiopia emanates from the seasonality of rainfall and the lack of infrastructure for storage to capture excess runoff during flood seasons. Based on this premise, a method for a syndicate use of topography, land use and vegetation was applied to locate potential surface water storing sites. The steady-state Topographic Wetness Index (TWI) was used to represent the spatial distribution of water flow and water stagnating across the study area and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) was used to detect surface water through multispectral analysis. With this approach, a number of water storing sites were identified in three categories: primary sources (water bodies based), secondary sources (Swampy/wetland based) and tertiary sources (the land based). A sample volume analysis for the 120354 water storing sites in category two, gives a 44.92BCM potential storing capacity with average depth of 4 m that improves the annual storage capacity of the country to 81BCM (8.6 % of annual renewable water sources). Finally, the research confirmed the TWI and NDVI based approach for water storing sites works without huge and complicated earth work; it is cost effective and has the potential of solving complex water resource challenges through spatial representation of water resource systems. Furthermore, the application of remote sensing captures temporal diversity and includes repetitive archives of data, enabling the monitoring of areas, even those that are inaccessible, at regular intervals
