Impact of Damage Characteristics from the Great East Japan Earthquake on the Regional Healthcare System and Economy

    Get PDF
Purpose: This study aimed to compare regional healthcare systems and economic cycles between inland regions that only experienced earthquake damage and coastal regions impacted by both the earthquake and the tsunami during the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. Methods: This study compared Tome(earthquake damage only)and Ishinomaki cities(earthquake and tsunami damage)in Miyagi Prefecture. Data were obtained from e-Stat and the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. A regional economic cycle analysis tool from the Ministry of the Environment was used to assess changes from 2010(pre-disaster)to 2020(post-disaster). Findings: Both cities experienced a decrease in population, a rise in aging rates, and an increase in single--elderly. The proportion of hospitals beds decreased in Tome, but increased in Ishinomaki. The number of home care support clinics and home visit nursing stations grew in Tome, but declined in Ishinomaki. Tome observed an increase in home visits and end-of-life care cases, whereas Ishinomaki experienced a decrease. The percentage of home deaths increased in Tome, but decreased in Ishinomaki. Ishinomaki witnessed substantial growth in its GRP(Gross Regional Product)and fiscal transfer ratios. The main sources of employee income in both cities shifted from health and social services to post-disaster construction, with Ishinomaki exhibiting a notable income increase. Implications: The regional healthcare system in disaster-affected regions must be reconstructed to create a balance between hospitals arrangements and home care services. Maintaining health and social services, along with key pre-disaster income sources, is vital for regional economic stability.departmental bulletin pape

Cognitive Flexibility: A Fundamental Concept in Comprehending Higher Brain Function

    Get PDF
Cognitive flexibility, the ability to switch cognitive sets, including perspectives, thoughts, and strategies, is a cornerstone of higher brain functions. This multifaceted cognitive skill plays a pivotal role in understanding developmental disorders in youth, the emergence of depression in adolescence, and the cognitive decline associated with dementia in later life. The Wisconsin Card Sorting Test, a widely used measure of cognitive flexibility, assesses cognitive set shifting, cognitive set maintenance, and rule inference. However, the high task complexity of this test renders it unsuitable for elucidating the neural basis of cognitive flexibility in nonhuman primates and rodents. Here, we present two tasks: tactics selection and two-target search. These were used to record neuronal activity in Japanese macaques. They offer a simpler and more controlled environment for investigating the neural mechanisms underlying cognitive flexibility. We also review the theoretical framework that enables learning in the two-target search task. Furthermore, we discuss the feasibility of adopting these tasks to rodent studies.departmental bulletin pape

    Biological effects of nano silver

    Get PDF
Silver, including nano-silver, demonstrated excellent antibacterial effects and is considered safe for the human body. Further, many antibacterial goods are sold, but their actual effects on humans and/or animals remain unclear. Silver ions are known to exert antimicrobial effects by denaturing proteins, affecting mitochondria, generating reactive oxygen species, and damaging DNA after being absorbed into cells of bacteria, fungi, and viruses. Gradually, it became evident that the in vivo behavior and cellular responses of nano-silver in humans and animals affect cells through a mechanism similar to its antibacterial effect. Furthermore, the usefulness of nano-silver in cancer treatment has recently become clear. This review presents an overview of the effect of nano-silver, including our research results.departmental bulletin pape
