The poetics of light in architecture: Light as architecture form

    No full text
The poetics of light may be defined as the deliberate manipulation of light in the creative act of architecture. To the same extent that spatial concepts have conformed to specific paradigms throughout the history of architecture, light and its articulation have been encoded with meaning peculiar to a defined period. Light in architecture can be qualified and investigated as an artefact, a fundamental element of the language of architecture, subject to the same rationale that determines the other elements of that language.

Not unlike architecture and landscape architecture, the programme in interior architecture at the University of Pretoria draws on and develops both the natural and human sciences. Students in interior architecture are required to cultivate these spheres and to synthesise their collective application through studio-based design modules. This approach is specifically proactive and contextual and thus enables generative decision-making, where strategy, argument, and concept inform and guide the process and product of design

SA architecture as Image and Text: A critical overview of publications in 2003

Architectural Africana is not well served by publishers. The crop of the year 2003 must be seen in this light. Winds of change blew through the magazine publishers. Piel de Beer, who has been editor of Architecture SA (as part of the now defunct Warrman\u27s stable) since 1989, later SA Architecture (as part of the Primedia stable), has been (temporarily?) given sabbatical to convalesce and his duties are now performed by Julian Cooke . The magazine also appears under the banner of Architecture South Africa (in the stable of Pica sso Headline). Leading Architecture - the independent break-away - have abandoned the experimentation introduced by Madelaine Page by having guest editors drawn from academia and following themes of their choosing, and on her resignation, have elected to become just another trade magazine. Fortunately Urban Green File, under the editorship of Carol Knoll , still remains a source of current, cutting edge, critical and independent commentary. In the presence of more likely competitors, this magazine has received the second consecutive PICA award for best trade magazine in the architectural category

During the eighteenth century, the Grand Tour was established as an important cultural tradition in Northern Europe. For wealthy young men, an extended tour abroad, and particularly of Italy, was considered necessary because: ... no reasonable man of Anglo-Saxon or Germanic stock has ever been wholly satisfied with his own civilisation. The Northern yearning for sun and grace has been pretty consistent (Burgess & Haskell 1970:5)
