    No full text
Master of Arts in Diplomacy, Development, and International SecurityThe presence and activities of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) in Djibouti garnered significant attention due to their potential impact on regional peace and security dynamics. This study examined AFRICOM's impact on the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA), focusing specifically on Djibouti as a case study. Three main objectives guided this research: first, to examine the impact of AFRICOM's interventions and activities in Djibouti; second, to evaluate the impact of AFRICOM's engagements on the APSA in Djibouti; and finally, to analyze the challenges and opportunities associated with AFRICOM's role in shaping peace and security dynamics in Djibouti. The study employed offensive neorealism as a theoretical framework and utilized a qualitative case study design. The sample included key stakeholders such as government officials, military personnel, and representatives from international organizations operating in Djibouti. Data collection procedures included semi-structured interviews, and data analysis employed thematic coding techniques. The results indicated that AFRICOM's interventions significantly enhanced Djibouti's military capabilities and regional security cooperation while raising concerns about sovereignty and long-term dependency. AFRICOM's engagements with APSA revealed complementary efforts and potential conflicts, highlighting the need for balanced cooperation. The study identified challenges such as perceptions of foreign interference and opportunities for leveraging AFRICOM's resources to address regional security threats. The study concluded that AFRICOM's presence has had a mixed impact on Djibouti's security landscape and its role within APSA. Recommendations include developing strategies to balance external support with local ownership of security initiatives and fostering closer alignment between AFRICOM's activities and regional development priorities to enhance long-term stability and security in the Horn of Africa.Daystar University, School of Arts and Social Science

Master of Arts in CommunicationThe COVID-19 pandemic has greatly affected religious practices globally, with physical gatherings and meetings being limited or completely halted. This has resulted in a shift towards the utilization of digital media as a tool for evangelism. This study examines how the Catholic Archdiocese of Nyeri has utilized digital media platforms for evangelization during the pandemic. Tied on New Media Theory, this study came up with three objectives. First, to explore how Catholic Archdiocese of Nyeri utilized digital media to reach its congregants during the COVID19 pandemic. Secondly, to examine the views of congregants of Catholic Archdiocese of Nyeri regarding the adoption and utilization of digital media for evangelization during the COVID -19 pandemic. Thirdly to establish challenges experienced by congregants and the Catholic Archdiocese of Nyeri regarding the use of digital media for evangelization during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study employed the explanatory sequential mixed methods design whereby the questionnaire and interviews were used. The study established that the Catholic Archdiocese of Nyeri can do better to improve its use of digital media for evangelization during situations of pandemics such as COVID-19, respondents called for better technical support to ensure uninterrupted communication, more interactive digital content for them to feel more involved and for more varied content formats. A notable gap in the Archdiocese's digital media strategy is the absence of comprehensive communication policies and resource toolkits specifically designed for digital media evangelization. The study recommends that there should be clear governing policies and guidelines in radio, print, social media, and other communication channels.Daystar University, School of Communicatio

    No full text
Journal ArticleBackground: Experiences of Skilled Birth Attendants (SBA) within and between the Maternal and Neonatal care segment is vital since they are the implementers of care. Aim: The objective of the review was to identify the experiences of Skilled Birth Attendants (SBA) with continuity of care (CoC) through the transitions of Maternal and Neonatal Health (MNH) continuum for effective care coordination. Methods: A qualitative systematic review was conducted of studies from the year 2000 to 2022 while following the Joanne Briggs Institute SUMARI critical appraisal tools. The first search was from 2/2/2021 to 16/2/2021, and a repeat search on 16/2/2022. PubMed, Cochrane, Scopus, Research 4 Life and Joanne databases were reviewed in English, French, and Spanish for data extraction and meta-aggregation done that led to the extraction of the discussed themes. Findings: The first theme on SBPs experiences was lack of timely CoC. The SBPs noted that women were not autonomous, and there was need for them to continuously update themselves with information in order to improve the Women-SBA/SBPs relationship on Continuity. The second theme acknowledged that the MNH continuum ought to be “Women Centred” (WC) and not “litigation centred” (LC). Third theme highlighted “what can be done”, from preconception to pregnancy, “what must be done” from pregnancy to birthing and “what needs to be done” from birth to postpartum. A gap was noted between the postnatal segment and the next conception segment as the “what next” segment. Conclusion: The missing segment between postpartum to preconception was suggested to be implemented immediately after birthing. The interconnectedness of continuity and coordination of care was suggested through a Midwifery Led Model (MLM)

    No full text
journal articleTo demonstrate similarity and dissimilarity of MPOX infections between Africa and other regions using multi-agency data. Background: MPOX was first reported in DRC in 1970 and transmitted around the world. It was declared public health emergency of international concern on August 14, 2024. Other regions have reported more infections with minimal deaths, but Africa is experiencing spiraling cases and mortalities amid gaps. Delays in acknowledging the situation, and attendant challenges are concomitant with allocating resources. We use data to demonstrate the MPOX situation in Africa and make recommendations. Method: We analyze data provided by multi-agency sources: WHO, 1st January 2022-June 30, 2024; Africa CDC, January-August 2024, WHO Strategic Preparedness and Response Plan (SPRP) September 2024 to February 2025; International Organization for Migration Mpox preparedness and Response plan; and in-country response teams. Twelve countries in each WHO classified region are selected based on the following criteria: either have reported high cases of MPOX or registered confirmed MPOX-related death in the period. We used Tukey HSD post hoc to compare regional mean cases and case fatality rates. Based on results, we had key informant interviews and focused group discussion with relevant in-country authority and drew recommendations. Results: Regional mean MPOX cases (95% CI, 3.36, 2.1, 0.01; P<0.01) are not statistically different. Case fatality rate in Africa is higher, (95 CI, 12, 6.4, 0.4; P<0.05). Like COVID-19, response is marked by low levels of preparedness, and loose international cooperation. Conclusion: Africa requires strengthening health system and enhanced international cooperation

MASTER OF ARTS in CommunicationThis study explores the perceptions of Twiva employees regarding the monetization of the X (Twitter) verification checkmark and its influence on digital credibility. The research addresses the problem of how the shift from free to paid verification affects users' trust in verified accounts and the credibility of information shared on social media. The purpose of the study is to investigate the implications of this monetization on users’ perceptions and interactions within the digital space. The research questions focus on how employees view the credibility of verified accounts, the trustworthiness of information and the influence of monetized verification on user behavior. The study is grounded in Symbolic Interaction Theory (SIT), which emphasizes the meanings derived from social interactions and symbols, such as the verification checkmark. A qualitative research design was employed, utilizing purposive sampling to select 12 participants from Twiva who were primarily active X users. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed thematically. Key findings indicate that participants hold divergent perspectives; some see monetization as a pathway to greater accessibility and inclusivity, while the majority of participants express concerns about the potential erosion of trust and authenticity in verified accounts. The study concludes that the commodification of verification could lead to increased skepticism among users, necessitating a re-evaluation of verification processes by social media platforms. Key recommendations include enhancing transparency in the verification process, exploring alternative methods of establishing credibility, and conducting further research on the long-term effects of monetized verification on user trust
