RodCast interaction: A novel technique for dense virtual reality environments
Virtual Reality (VR) technologies continue to grow in popularity and application versatility, yet effective interaction within complex dense environments remains as a critical challenge. In particular, users with low level of VR experience often face decreased accuracy and dissatisfaction selecting occluded objects. A variety of interaction techniques to select and manipulate objects exist, but there is a research gap in understanding what kinds of techniques support users in dense environments. This study evaluates the user performance and preference in such environments. Three interaction techniques are examined in this study: Go-Go Hand, Flower Cone, and a proposed technique called RodCast Interaction. RodCast Interaction introduces an arc-based gesture-controlled technique to enhance object selection by previewing the interaction path. A within-subjects user study was conducted using a commodity VR headset and a simple virtual environment, where participants completed occluded object selection tasks with four standardized target distances and three defined density levels. Performance was assessed through accuracy and time. Although the Go-Go Hand and Flower Cone techniques outperformed RodCast in the overall results, certain findings suggest that RodCast may offer enhanced user experiences in larger environments or for users with greater experience. Overall, this study utilizes a user study to identify design considerations for interaction techniques in VR, with an emphasis on usability and effectiveness in high-occlusion scenarios

Admission Screening into Signed Language Interpreter Education: A Longitudinal Case Study of Readiness
Testing applicants for admission into academic interpreting programs, whether spoken or signed, centers on the attempt to recruit and retain students who are most likely to acquire interpreting skills and successfully complete programs. Despite continual experimentation with various screening instruments and procedures in interpreter education, a definitive battery of tests to predict favorable student outcomes remains elusive to researchers, and programs are justifiably reluctant to enforce admission decisions based on screenings that have not been sufficiently evaluated for validity and reliability. This exploratory study provides an analysis of nine years of admission screening data to identify variables that might significantly impact the outcomes of one institution’s screening process. The researchers sought to observe the usefulness of an admission screening tool for predicting readiness and successful completion of a nationally accredited, bachelor-level ASL - English Interpreting Program at a public university. The sample comprised all program applicants who were screened for entry into upper-level coursework (i.e., ‘the program’) between 2016-2024 (N = 229). The measures included test scores maintained in an anonymous database, group demographics, matriculation, and time to program completion. Quantitative data analysis (using SPSS, version 29) determined the relationship between test scores, admission decisions, and progress to program completion. The study produced usable findings about admission and denial rates, student completion rates, differences between transfer and native students (provisionally admitted or otherwise), and the variables most likely to impact admission decisions
Shaping a resilient future: Perspectives of Sign Language Interpreters and Deaf Community in Africa
The study sought to explore the state of deaf and interpreter communities of the countries in the African region. It adopted a mixed-method approach consisting of comprehensive document reviews, online collection of data using a questionnaire and key informant discussions at the Conference. The survey approach also deployed both qualitative and quantitative research methods. The Google form was deployed as a platform for data collection and analysis. The findings reveal that despite majority of the countries having ratified the UNCPRD, and several others having existing national policies supporting accessibility for the deaf populations, domestication and implementation still remains a challenge. The study further explores the current situation in the region, identifies the efforts and milestones being made by the deaf and interpreter communities and the opportunities for increased accessibility for the deaf populations through legislation, as well as development of the sign language interpreting profession in the region
