THE RENDERING OF ANTHROPONYMS IN BUSINESS AND POLITICAL TEXTS FROM ENGLISH INTO LITHUANIAN
The phenomenon of naming a person has existed from time immemorial, with ancient philosophers such as Socrates and Aristotle already being interested in the origin and meaning of human names. In terms of translation, anthroponyms are sometimes considered as untranslatable linguistic elements or, rather, elements which do not need to be translated, as they can cross the boundaries of different languages in their authentic forms. Yet, in reality, the situation is quite different, as names can have literal meaning and serve as character defining elements in literary texts while differences of languages create problems even when rendering anthroponyms with no semantic meaning in non-fictional texts. This paper focuses on the translation of personal proper nouns from English into Lithuanian in business-related and political discourse and aims to find out the dominant translation tendencies. The scope of the study is 100 anthroponyms. The renderings are analysed and subdivided according to the following name translation procedures: transference, substitution, translation, modification
METACULTURE MATTERS
One essential component for training students in international communication includes the attention to culture and intercultural interaction. However, since the process of globalization has spread many common practices across the surface level of society, it is critical to consider its effects on our current representation of culture and cultural practices. This includes a reexamination of the cultural models which have traditionally been taught. Specifically, I propose that certain global behaviors are apparent and frequent enough to constitute a collective of shared norms and practices, and I call this level of shared behaviors the metaculture. The metaculture provides us with a convenient way to look at how people act within a globalized context and helps us define certain traits or values that take on a more universal acceptance. I argue that by its very nature, the metaculture is constantly being redefined, and offers us a unique paradigm through which to approach our experiences in the context in which they take place. I also propose a sliding scale model of cultural interaction which offers a more dynamic and context-based approach to describing interactional behavior
EXAMINATION OF SUSTAINABILITY INDICATORS IN AN ORIENTED STRAND BOARD (OSB) BUSINESS WITH SUSTAINABLE VALUE STREAM MAPPING DESIGN (SUS-VSM)
Sustainability in the forest products sector in Turkey depends on the sustainable management of the country\u27s forests, but its importance has been increasing in recent years. Various practices are implemented in the sector for sustainability. However, little is known about the consequences of these practices in forest products businesses. Oriented Strand Board (OSB), an output of the forest products sector, is produced by mixing the chips obtained by chipping small-diameter round wood raw material in the longitudinal direction with glue and wax, and then pressing them under certain pressure and temperature. This study aims to examine sustainability indicators in an OSB business with Sustainable Value Stream Mapping Design (sus-VSM). The research was carried out in a business that has been producing OSB for more than 10 years in Turkey. The business has high quality efficiency (99.7%) in the economic indicator and high material efficiency (97.8%) in the environmental indicator. The safety efficiency level, one of the social indicators, is low (70%). The results showed that the business can be an exemplary business in terms of sustainable production by making improvements in the safety level. It is recommended to add efficiency regarding waste use by sector as a variable to the sus-VSM design in future studies
EXPLORING PEER ASSESSMENT IN UNDERGRADUATE ESSAY WRITING: CHEMISTRY MODULE STUDY
This article reports on a study that investigates the impact of peer assessment on undergraduate students\u27 understanding of essay writing criteria within the Chemistry Molecules in Action module. The study involved 44 first-year undergraduate students from diverse academic backgrounds who participated in a formative activity for which they wrote a 700-word essay on a specific topic and assessed two essays from their peers. The research aimed to examine student perceptions of peer assessment as a tool for enhancing essay writing skills, collaborative work, and the ability to provide constructive feedback and engage critically with peers\u27 essays. Data collection included an anonymous online survey distributed to all module students, focusing on the effectiveness, challenges, and benefits of peer assessment. The findings provide insights into diverse perspectives on the efficacy of peer feedback and anticipated challenges, highlighting the importance of tailored support and resources to foster a supportive peer assessment environment. These findings contribute to ongoing discussions on the efficacy of peer assessment and pedagogical enhancement strategies in higher education
ASSESSING THE DEXTERITY OF HUMAN HAND IN SOME DAILY MOVEMENTS THROUGH AN ACUPRESSURE AND CURVATURE DATA GLOVE
The human hand is a highly-precisely designed organ that helps us complete the most complex and delicate movements in our daily life. However, in the real world, people may lose part of their hand function. The rehabilitation of the patient’s hand becomes extremely important. In this study we developed a wearable hand motion sensing system that combines curvature sensors and pressure sensors to assess the degrees of bending of fingers when people perform different hand motions and finger pressure. In this study, we first collected the data of curvature and pressure of people\u27s fingers in various daily actions through the glove. We then investigated differences between finger curvature and pressure when people performed the same movements. Finally, we analyzed the similarities or differences in how people perform different activities of daily living. Experimental results show that people adjust how they use their fingers (curvature) and how they apply force (acupressure) depending on the size, material, and weight of the item. When people perform fine actions, certain fingers play an important role in both actuating force and auxiliary support. On the contrary, when the action requires relatively more force, some fingers play the role of action output and the others play the role of auxiliary support
MODERN PERSPECTIVES ON ION BĂIEȘU’S THEATER AND HIERONYMUS BOSCH’S PAINTINGS
This article aims to demonstrate that there are no boundaries that could separate arts and literature, the two fields being connected to the same aesthetic reality. The approach of Ion Băieșu’s theater reveals a surprising fictional universe in which bizarre figures live and turn into grotesque hypostases. The doctor or the healer become more than simple dramatic characters and more likely projections of tormented selves fighting against each other for a brutal and absurd purpose. In an authentic manner, these symbolic images manage to describe a sublime universe that encounters Bosch paintings by reconstructing emblematic scenes, named suggestively by the painter: Cutting the Stone (The Cure of Folly) or The Ship of Fools. In fact, the perspective is absolutely inspiring, both pictures conveying the very sense of madness as a form of being both in the writer’s and the painter’s world. This analysis-reflection will highlight the powerful connection between these two artists, trying to emphasize symbolic and truthful meanings
FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES OF INCLUSIVE EDUCATION – AN ATTEMPT AT EXPLANATION
The article aims to highlight the necessity of implementing inclusive education in schools as a response to the need for building an open society. Its success depends on understanding the essence of this concept. Therefore, the author of the paper points out the most common mistakes that contradict the idea of inclusive education, as well as the foundations for its possible implementation
EMPLOYMENT TRENDS AND GROWTH CHALLENGES IN THE SLOVAK REPUBLIC
The Slovak labor market faces challenges similar to those in other EU countries. Increasing the participation of inhabitants in the employment rate is crucial in the fight against poverty. A fundamental assumption for employment growth is economic growth, largely stimulated by domestic demand. In recent years, the global crisis has significantly impacted the economic system, affecting global labor markets by causing cost reductions, wage freezes, worker layoffs, and a reduction in employment rates. Addressing employment rate issues requires the development of active labor market policies
EXPLORING THE CAPACITY OF AGRO-INDUSTRIAL WASTE TO COUNTERACT THE TOXIC EFFECTS OF MYCOTOXINS
Mycotoxins are fungal secondary metabolites, which threaten the lives of both animals and humans. The decontamination of cereal crops and fruits is almost impossible due to their physical and chemical stability. Zearalenone (ZEA) is a fusariotoxin that can cause hormonal, digestive, neurological or immune dysfunctions, pigs being one of the most affected species. Agro-industrial waste could be a viable solution to counteract the mycotoxins toxic effects as they are rich in bioactive compounds (polyphenols, polyunsaturated fatty acids etc) with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anti-microbial properties. Our results have shown that rapeseed meal could alleviate the proinflammatory effects induced by ZEA at the gut level. However, the mechanisms involved in this process are not known, therefore the aim of our ex vivo study was to investigate the signaling pathways responsible for the ability of rapeseed meal (unfermented-RSM or fermented with Saccharomyces cerevisiae-FRSM) to counteract the inflammatory response triggered by ZEA in porcine jejunum explants. The explants collected from the jejunum of healthy piglets were incubated in DMEM/F12 HAM medium and treated or not with ZEA 100µg/mL and with methanolic extracts of RSM/FRSM for 4 hours. Gene expression of a couple of signaling molecules involved in the innate immunity (TLR2, TLR4, TLR5, TLR9, MyD88, MD2) and inflammatory response (Nrf2, IRAK1, TRAF6, TAK1, TGFβ2, AP1, AKT), also of MAPKs (ERK1/2, JNK1/2, p38α) which regulates the activity of pro-inflammatory cytokines were evaluated. Our results showed that 100µg/mL of ZEA increased the gene expression of TAK1, TGFβ2, NF-κB, JNK2 and p38α MAPK. The main mechanism involved seems to be the activation of TLR4/MyD88/MD2 signaling pathway due to the up regulation of these gene expressions by ZEA. The addition of RSM/FRSM extracts was able to significantly reduce the effects of ZEA on the analyzed signaling molecules, to the control levels, mainly through the inhibition of the TLR4/MyD88/MD2 signaling pathway
FLIPPED LEARNING APPROACH IN DIFFERENT ACADEMIC COURSES IN CIVIL ENGINEERING, TRAFFIC AND TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING AND ARCHITECTURE
Flipped classroom approach is the educational method which was lately encouraged and supported by the University of Maribor and therefore implemented in certain courses at the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering and Architecture. As in any other novelty, only practical usage can show its real value. The teachers of discussed courses introduced flipped learning after they had experienced online teaching and returned to face-to-face lectures. The combination of both allows them to use already prepared online study materials and interact with students in the lecture room. Flipped learning encourages students to be involved in active learning activities, they can study at their own pace at any time that is suitable for them, through Moodle and MS Teams they always have access to literature and instructions. However, they should be mature, disciplined, and motivated for the individual work. Even though mastering learning management system and be available for students in the lecture room results in more obligations for teachers, face-to-face lectures prove higher engagement of students and easier educational process for all
