Rochester General Hospital Edition June 2005     DEMENTIA  Dementia is a decline in memory, reasoning and other mental abilities. Approximately 4 to 5 million people in the United States have some degree of dementia. It is the leading reason for placing elderly people into nursing homes.  There are reversible and irreversible dementias. Alzheimer’s Disease is the most common cause of irreversible dementia. The present estimated cost of Alzheimer’s care is over 100 billion dollars annually. Rochester General Hospital Edition December 2005     ‘TIS THE SEASON TO BE MERRY ... LAUGH & STAY HEALTHY    Numerous research studies have shown laughter positively affects our immune systems. When we laugh, T cells or natural killer cells and cells that produce antibodies increase in number, while certain stress hormones decrease. Circulation, our hearts and our emotional well-being are all impacted by our ability to laugh. Laughter is a tool that can enhance our physical health and spiritual joy. Rochester General Hospital Edition October 2005        CARE OF THE CAREGIVER Caregiving means caring for others, whether friends or relatives, who have health problems or disabilities and need assistance. In the past decade care has gone beyond the tasks of transportation, shopping, household chores and personal care. Administering oral and parenteral medications, performing wound care and monitoring signs and symptoms are a few of the more demanding yet routine tasks.  Caregivers often face high levels of stress and extreme demands on their time, energy and finances.  The following articles are intended to help the caregiver’s plight. Rochester General Hospital Edition November 2005    SMOKING CESSATION Nicotine is one of the most heavily used addictive drugs in the United States. In 2003, 29.8 percent of the U.S. population 12 and older, 70.8 million people, used tobacco.  This figure includes 3.6 million young people age 12 to 17. Tobacco use remains the leading preventable cause of death in the United States, causing more than 440,000 deaths each year and resulting in an annual cost of more than $75 billion in direct medical costs.  Cigarette smoking accounts for nearly one-third of all cancer deaths in this country each year. It is responsible for approximately 30 million physician visits annually, and the cost of treating cough in the U.S. exceeds $1 billion annually. A cough is considered chronic when it persists for 3 or more weeks. Cough can be a symptom of many underlying diseases. Rochester General Hospital Edition January 2005     BARIATRIC SURGERY  Obesity recently has been called an epidemic. In the United States, more than 60% of adults are overweight. For patients with morbid obesity, surgery is the only treatment known to produce sustained weight loss and to reduce comorbidities.
