Misrepresentation and Misidentification of English Learners in Special Education

    Get PDF
This thesis capstone project aims to support teachers and educational staff that work with ELs (English learners), who often face misrepresentation in special education—being both overrepresented and underrepresented. This misrepresentation is due to numerous factors including a lack of teacher training on how to effectively educate these students. Misidentified students face many challenges, including loss of instructional time, unaddressed learning needs, lower academic achievement, restricted opportunities for higher education and career, decreased self-determination and self-esteem, double stigmatization, and social isolation. Although overrepresentation and underrepresentation are significant issues, the former is more prevalent. To address this concern, a professional development program was created to help educators at Riverhead Elementary School accurately identify and address students’ educational needs to decrease the overidentification of ELs in special education. The goal of this professional development is to equip teachers with the knowledge, skills and resources to more accurately identify the cause of ELs’ academic struggles.AMSUNY BrockportDepartment of Education and Human DevelopmentMSAltalouli, Mahmou

Comparing WRF Simulation of a Polar Low Case to Observed Data from COMBLE

    Get PDF
During my summer research on the COMBLE project, I had the opportunity to do a WRF model simulation on a polar low (PL) case that occurred on 02/04/2020 during the DOE COMBLE project. The reasoning for this specific case was because of the structure of the system and overall intensity of it made for a good project. Observational datasets are used along with WRF simulations to study the characteristics of this PL case. Preliminary results will be presented to see how accurately WRF can recreate the PL case.Atmospheric and Geological Science

The Effects of Sport Specialization on Adolescent Athletes

    Get PDF
Youth sports continue to grow worldwide. With this continued rise in popularity, it is important to take the necessary precautions to ensure that all adolescent athletes can enjoy sports with as little risk as possible. Sport specialization has also seen a rise in numbers among adolescent athletes, as many athletes try to gain advantages by putting all training efforts towards one sport. The purpose of this synthesis is to review the literature on the effects of sport specialization on adolescent athletes.AMSUNY BrockportDepartment of Kinesiology, Sport Studies, and Physical EducationMSBevilacqua, Zachar

Synergies between Case-based Reasoning and Deep Learning for Survival Analysis in Oncology

    Get PDF
Survival analysis is routinely used in medicine to stratify patients in groups based on risk and has paramount importance in patient stratification and treatment. This work combines bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory LSTM and case-based reasoning to provide accurate and interpretable survival predictions that perform better than state-of-the-art survival analysis methods.Biomedical and Health Informatic

Helping Our Graduate Students SOAR: Promoting Scholarship and Populating Our Institutional Repository

    Get PDF
The author describes how a requirement that our graduate students deposit theses and dissertations into our institutional repository (SOAR) helped to build our online scholarship, educate and strengthen graduate stu- dents’ identities as scholars, and forge relationships with the library. Taking advantage of the synergy brought about by a new open access policy, a robust digital repository, and library staff committed to advancing accessible scholarly works, we developed ways to educate, encourage, and promote our newest scholars. Based upon our success thus far, we will develop workshops and tutorials that will be extended to junior faculty to advance their scholarly success.NASUNY College of OptometryN/

The Impact of Multimodal Approaches on Language Acquisition and Academic Performance for English Language Learners

    Get PDF
Multimodal approaches such as technology incorporation, interactive activities and visual aids have had substantial positive impact on English language learners, as well as other students in their academic performance and language acquisition. The problem is many teachers still heavily rely on traditional teaching methods in their classroom which does not meet the unique learning styles of language learners. Inadequate instruction traditional teaching methods present and the lack of engagement and motivation for the students. Multimodal approaches have positive effects on student language learning and academic success. My goal is to share my research and professional development to teachers to help guide them in changing their traditional teaching methods to a multimodal approach that will strengthen student’s academic performance, language acquisition, engagement in materials and motivation to learn.AMSUNY BrockportDepartment of Education and Human DevelopmentMSAltalouli, Mahmou

Early Detection of Breast Cancer in Younger Women

    Get PDF
This project introduces the Breast Cancer Early Detection Device (BCEDD), a wearable device synchronized with an online platform designed for remote monitoring of breast health among younger women. According to a study by Memon et al. (2015), “respondents aged 18-25 years revealed that while a majority, 74%, had never performed breast self-examination, only a small percentage had undergone breast examinations by health professionals or participated in breast screening programs. Despite this, a substantial number of respondents, 74.3%, considered breast cancer screening important for young women.” These findings underscore the critical need for accessible and effective screening methods, particularly among younger demographics, highlighting the relevance and urgency of initiatives such as the proposed Breast Cancer Early Detection Device (BCEDD). The BCEDD aims to revolutionize breast health management by providing personalized, real-time feedback and support, facilitating proactive intervention and early detection of potential abnormalities. The online platform serves as a centralized hub for data collection, analysis, and communication between users and healthcare providers. Employing both qualitative research methods and statistical analysis, user-centered design principles guide the optimization of the BCEDD and platform to ensure accessibility, usability, and acceptance. By empowering younger women with continuous monitoring and personalized interventions, the BCEDD seeks to empower individuals to take initiative-taking control of their health, leading to improved healthcare outcomes.NASUNY OswegoBiomedical and Health InformaticsMSByeon, Boseo
