From Plastic Surgery to National Identity.
British surgical photographer Percy Hennell (1911-1987) worked alongside the ‘world famous … father of modern plastic surgery’[1] Harold Delf Gilles (1882-1960) to capture pioneering reconstruction facial surgery in 1941-42. The two toured America and Canada during this time helping to bolster ‘the status of Britain at war at a time when, initially, America was still teetering between neutrality and entering the conflict.’[2]
The works shown here further dissect Hennell’s photographs by juxtaposing a number of his subjects into new painted images. This piecing together of images in paint hints at the now common use of plastic surgery in modern society. It marks the shift away from reconstruction and reassimilation towards vanity and the meddling in our ‘own physical attributes in a desire to sculpt a vision of perfect beauty.’[3]
Manipulation through image connects painting to surgical operations, these works also draw on ideas of image, beauty, state propaganda and war. A direct reference to Eisenstein’s film “Battleship Potemkin” can be found in the glasses of one particular subject.

Two-cycles in the Infinite Exponential Tower
The infinite exponential tower is studied through the associated iteration c₁ = 0 and cₙ₊₁ = eᶜₙ λ, for complex λ. For a subset of λ values, the sequence displays stable 2-cycles, that is to say as n → ∞ we observe that the odd subsequence c₂ₙ₋₁ → A whereas the even subsequence c₂ₙ → B, with A ≠ B. Thus, A and B obey B=eᴬ λ and A = eᴮ λ. Numerical investigations of the 2-cycles use a further transformation ζexp(-ζ) = λ = ln(z) and the set of ζ values corresponding to 2-cycles has a curious shape, reminding us of pictures of insect larva; the region has sharply scalloped edges. This paper gives an analytic expression for the edges of the 2-cycle region and a complete explanation of the cusps on the boundary that give the scalloped look

A Sparse Differential Algebraic Equation (DAE) and Stiff Ordinary Differential Equation (ODE) Solver in Maple
This paper implements efficient numerical methods in Maple to solve index-1 nonlinear Differential Algebraic Equations (DAEs) and stiff Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs) systems. Single-step methods (like Trapezoid (TR), Implicit-mid point (IMP), Euler-backward (EB), Radau IIA (Rad) methods, TRBDF2, TRX2) and backward-difference formula of order 2 are implemented with adaptive time-stepping methods in Maple to solve index-1 nonlinear DAEs. Maple’s robust and efficient ability to search within a list/set is exploited to identify the sparsity pattern and automatically calculate the analytic Jacobian. The algorithm and implementation are robust and efficient for index-1 DAE problems and scale well for finite difference/finite element discretization of two-dimensional models with system size up to 10,000 nonlinear DAEs and solve the same in a few seconds. The computational efficiency of the proposed algorithm (provided as an open-access code) compares favorably with the commercial solver gPROMs, one of the most commonly used sparse DAE solvers in the industry

Quantifying the Association Between Family Homelessness and School Absence in Wales, UK
Using administrative data linkage, this paper sought to quantify the impacts of family homelessness on pupil absence from school. It addresses a gap in United Kingdom (UK) homelessness research, which draws predominantly on qualitative methods and where there is a greater focus on people who fall outside of the statutory system, i.e., single people living on the streets, rather than families. Education records for the academic years 2012/13 to 2015/16 relating to pupils aged 5 to 15 years old living in a coastal city in Wales, UK, were linked to data on households assessed by the statutory housing service operating across the same region. Analysis of mean half-day sessions absent from school, and Poisson panel regression were used to explore associations between absenteeism (authorised, unauthorised, and total), and whether pupils were living in a household making a statutory homelessness application, i.e., experiencing family homelessness. On average, in any given academic year, pupils experiencing family homelessness (PEFH) missed 5 days more of school than pupils not experiencing family homelessness (PnEFH). Adjusted regression analysis found that the rate of total absence was 7% higher amongst PEFH compared to PnEFH, whilst for unauthorised absence it was 13% higher. When a student experienced family homelessness, this led to an increase in their rate of total absences by 5%—adjusting for other factors—compared to when they were not homeless. Findings have implications for statutory education and housing provision, specifically the need for greater cross-disciplinary working to prevent and alleviate the harms caused when families experience homelessness
Five Equivalent Representations of a Phylogenetic Tree
A phylogenetic tree is a tree with a fixed set of leaves that has no vertices of degree two. To our knowledge, there are four other representations of such a tree. In this paper, we focus on these four representations, and show that they are all equivalent. In particular, we give the conversions in between them, which builds the bridges that eventually connect the five representations
Analysis of a simple mathematical model describing tuberculous granuloma
This paper discusses a mathematical model describing the formation of tuberculosis(TB) granulomas. The main purpose is to analyze the change trend of Mtb and immune cells in different stages after Mtb invaded the host. The theoretical analysis indicates that the existence and global stability of bacteria-free equilibrium and bacteria-present equilibrium under different conditions. In addition, the sensitivity analysis is performed on the parameters, which determines the parameters that have the greatest impact on Mtb invading the host. The stage of no infection, the latent TB infection(LTBIs) and active TB corresponding to the clearance, survival or growth and reproduction of Mtb are displayed by the numerical simulations. The results suggest that whether the individuals infected with Mtb will be progressed to the active TB depends on the immune system of individuals
The influence of Viewing Race Consistent vs. Race inconsistent Models on Self Esteem for High And Low Self-Monitors
The present study was designed to investigate the relationship between self-esteem, self-monitoring and race inconsistent and consistent photographs. The Sorensen Self-Esteem Scale was used to measure self-esteem and the Snyder Self Monitoring Scale (Snyder, 1974) was used to measure self-monitoring levels. Caucasian female participants viewed either photographs of Caucasian models or African American models. Data were collected from 40 undergraduate students at Huron University College. A 2 (high versus low self-esteem) X 2 (congruity of race of photos) analysis of variance demonstrated that there were no significant main effects, nor was the interaction significant. Implications and limitations of the present study and future research opportunities are also discussed
