Cobalt-Catalyzed Enantioselective Desymmetrization and Chemodivergent Parallel Kinetic Resolution of Unsaturated Substrates via C(sp3)–H Bond Activation
In transition-metal-mediated chemical transformations, chemoselective or chemodivergent activation of inert C–H bonds in the presence of more reactive alkene or alkyne π-bonds is a fundamental challenge. Herein, we report the Co-catalyzed cycloisomerization of unsaturated substrates bearing a 1,6-diyne moiety via enantioselective desymmetrization and parallel kinetic resolution involving the chemoselective and chemodivergent activation of a C(sp3)–H bond. The enantioselective desymmetrization of symmetrical dienediynes was demonstrated using a 1,1′-binaphthyl-based chiral phosphine ligand to afford the corresponding enantioenriched 1,3-diene products. The parallel kinetic resolution of unsymmetrical substrates such as enetriynes, dienediynes, and diynenitriles was also demonstrated, where the chemodivergent activation of a C(sp3)–H bond and an alkene, alkyne, or nitrile π-bond was achieved. The 1,3-diene products were successfully derivatized to 5–8–5 tricyclic compounds via a central-to-helical-to-central chirality transfer involving memory of chirality.journal articl

近世戒律復興の初期状況 : 祖師俊正明忍の対馬からの書簡をめぐって
This study interprets nine Letters from the Founder (in the collection of the Saimyōji), dispatched by Shunjō Myōnin, the founder of the early modern revival of the Buddhist precepts, from Tsushima, where he was staying, hoping to cross to the continent to receive the precepts via separate conferral. Many of these letters are addressed to Eun, and they evince the names of lay stewards and monks which are not recorded in other sources. Myōnin also dispatched letters to his family home, and to monks of other temples in Kyoto with whom he had relations, sometimes with requests to send him items or books. He also communicated with villagers in Tsushima. He also had close relations with Nichiō, a monk of the Fujufuse (“Neither Giving Nor Accepting”) branch of the Nichiren sect. Thus, it is not the case that Myōnin came in solitude to Tsushima, cutting off his personal ties. Myōnin resolved not to return to his monastery until he had received the precepts via separate conferral. While waiting for permission to cross to the continent, he died of illness in the third year of his sojourn.departmental bulletin pape
Rethinking the Person Affecting Approaches in Population Ethics
In population ethics, a new version of the Person Affecting Approaches (PAA) has gained prominence among influential writers. The new PAA hold that having a life of a certain quality can be better or worse for a person than nonexistence, and embrace the Wide Person Affecting Restriction (WPAR): if an outcome A is ethically better than B, A would be better than B for someone that would exist if either A or B were realized. However, these approaches encounter several critical challenges. Firstly, the new PAA fail to uphold the Neutrality intuition central to the original PAA, which regard creating happy people as ethically neutral. Secondly, coupled with certain plausible principles, the new PAA imply the Repugnant Conclusion: a large population with lives barely worth living could be ethically preferable to a smaller population with high-quality lives. Thirdly, while the new PAA exclude certain moral theories, this exclusion can also be achieved through the more plausible Mere Addition principle. Lastly, accepting that existence can be better or worse for a person than nonexistence leads to either metaphysical absurdities or semantic difficulties, weakening the intuitive appeal of WPAR. Given these issues, the new PAA lack strong motivation, and ethicists may well need to reconsider basing their views on this framework.departmental bulletin pape
