Electrochemical synthesis and carbon doping of nanostructured iron fluorides from the selection of metal current collectors in lithium-ion batteries

The use of materials that rely on conversion reactions as electrodes in lithium-ion batteries is extensively investigated due to their potential for enhanced capacity compared to traditional electrode materials. Iron fluorides, in particular, present a promising alternative in terms of specific capacity. However, these materials often face challenges related to low intrinsic conductivity. This issue is typically addressed in the literature by doping the active material with carbon particles and reducing the particle size of the active material. This study explores the feasibility of directly integrating conductive carbon from the substrate into the fluoride-based active material during the synthesis process. The synthesis employs a simple anodic method conducted directly on the chosen metallic substrate, which then functions as the current collector in the devices. This approach simplifies the synthesis process, reduces processing time, and eliminates the need for additives and binders at the conventional active material-current collector interface. Two FeF3 layers were electrochemically synthesized on steel substrates with different carbon contents. These layers were evaluated as cathode-active materials for rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. The influence of carbon on the conductivity of the conversion layer was assessed using Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) with a model based on conductive porous electrodes. Morphological and thickness analyses of the layers showed a strong correlation between increased pore size and layer thickness and the carbon content in the metallic substrate. The optimal performance was observed with the layer on the substrate with higher carbon content. The electrochemical performance of the active material was further evaluated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and galvanostatic tests in pouch cells. The conversion layers derived from carbon steel exhibited reduced resistivity and enhanced specific capacitance and cyclability compared to layers formed on pure iron.Universidade de Vigo/CISU

Abstract. Forest areas or green infrastructure have become a fundamental economic and social factor which has made it possible to generate new sources of employment and to maximize the use of basic resources. Nevertheless, good conservation of this type of infrastructure is a challenge. This is due to the problems deriving from, on the one hand, the increase of its physical scope and, on the other, poor management or no management at all. The Spanish region of Galicia is a historic place of natural wealth, especially concerning forest resources, wherein 2/3 of its territory is forest area from where more than half of the Spanish wood supply comes. This paper seeks to create a mapping of major forest fire disturbances on the Galician territory over extended periods of time. To achieve this, an automated multitemporal detection process based on vegetation indices and unsupervised learning is developed. The objective is to obtain data heterogeneity in terms of vegetation state, land use, and image properties, allowing a better understanding of forest land disturbances and improving their management.Agencia Estatal de Investigación | Ref. Optimal design of Spanish Navy F-110 frigates combat information center

    No full text
The CIC (Combat Information Center) is a naval vessel room with unique and characteristic elements where operators perform searching, monitoring, control, analysis, assistance and critical decision functions. The CIC processes all the vessel information in real time and manages, coordinates and supervises all the actions to be taken in the ship. The CIC layout of the last built frigates of the Spanish Navy (F-100 series) is based on proven design. However, the latest design trends observed in other navies around the world, together with the evolution of the combat scenarios towards low/medium intensity hybrid threats, makes the Spanish Navy wonder whether the current F-100 CIC design can be extrapolated to the future F-110 frigates. Thus, the aim of this paper is to provide the Spanish Navy Staff with a decision tool that helps in determining the optimal distribution of the future F-110 CIC. For this purpose, an Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was firstly developed from experts’ criteria. In order to reduce the subjectivity of this first model, a series of simulated evacuations of the CIC personnel were performed according to a statistical design of experiments. The results of these simulations were experimentally validated and then added to the multicriteria decision model, thus creating a less subjective decision tool

Introduction: In gymnastics sports, including Acrobatic Gymnastics (AG), there is a prevalence of Eating Disorders (ED). One of its main causes lies in body dissatisfaction. Therefore, the objectives of this study were: a) to know and compare the risk of ED and body dissatisfaction in a group of national level GA athletes at two levels of competition, b) to estimate if there are gymnasts who meet any of the criteria for referral to a health centre. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with the participation of 74 national female gymnasts in the Youth and Age Group categories. Height and weight measurements were used to find body mass index (BMI) and bodyfold for % body fat (%BF). The Eating Disorders Inventory (EDI 3-RF) and the Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ) were used for the variables Body Dissatisfaction and the EDI 3-RF was also used for the variable EDI 3-RF for the variable ED. Results: The results showed that there are low percentages of gymnasts at risk of ED, finding body dissatisfaction as a possible antecedent for the presence of these disorders. Conclusions: The higher category age group gymnasts stand out for a higher risk of developing ED and body dissatisfaction, as they present higher levels of Obsession for thinness, bulimic behaviours and body dissatisfaction, but without significant differences. Signals a possible onset of risk in higher categories. A large number of studies on the reclamation of mine soils focused on the problem caused by metals and did not explore in depth the issue of nutrients and vegetation after the application of organic materials. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of two treatments made of wastes and vegetated with Brassica juncea L. on the fertility of a settling pond mine soil. The first treatment was compost, biochar, and B. juncea (SCBP) and the second treatment was technosol, biochar, and B. juncea (STBP). This study evaluated the effect of the treatments on the soil nutrient concentrations and fertility conditions in the soil amendment mixtures, after 11 months of greenhouse experiment. Total carbon and nitrogen concentrations were higher in treatment SCBP than in treatment STBP after 7 months but, after 11 months, carbon concentration was higher in STBP. The used technosol could have forms of carbon more stable than compost, which could be released slower than in the compost-amended soils. Both compost and technosol mixed with biochar also increased the concentration of calcium, potassium, magnesium, and sodium in exchangeable form in the mine soil

Independence of axioms in ranking opportunity sets taking into account similarity relations induced by money-metric utility functions

    No full text
The objective of this work is to prove the independence of the axioms that characterise rules for ranking opportunity sets: the preference for diversity ordering, the cardinality-first ordering, and the preference-first ordering. The proof of the independence of axioms reinforces the value of the characterisation, since if there were axioms where a consequence of others, they should be eliminated from said characterisation.
