A nation’s character can be built through the education. In addition, the advancement of a nation can also be driven by the quality education. A good education will guarantee a nation’s wealth and its competitiveness in science and technology. A few decades ago, Indonesia was well known for its quality education system and the human resources. As the result, many Indonesian teachers were sent abroad to teach other nations. Yet, today from the Human Development Index, Indonesian must admit other nations’ superiority in their quality human resources. This article tries to portrait the education system of Singapore and its implication to its nation building
THE STUDIES OF ARABIC LANGUAGE DURING THE CLASSICAL PERIOD OF ISLAMIC EDUCATION
The studies of Arabic language had taken place since the early classical age of Islam. The studies were influenced much by the interests of Moslems in understanding and articulating the message of the Qur’an and hadith. Historically, for many centuries the Arabic language had an important role in uniting the different ethnic groups, nations, and even religions under one Islamic empire. However, while the conversions of the subdued inhabitants to Islam required a longer period, the acceptance of Arabic as the common language took even longer, and still some groups clung to their native language. Besides, the ulama always sought to subordinate the study of Arabic grammar to the Islamic religious sciences and to limit to influence of grammarians over young men. They feared that grammar which relied on Greek logic as a methodology could lead to fascination with other Greek intellectual sciences
ANALISIS WACANA KRITIS: METODE ANALISIS DALAM PERSPEKTIF NORMAN FAIRCLOUGH
The analysis of texts both written and spoken is not explicitly and systematically correlated to the discourse structure. Some critical linguistic contributions and social semiotics have been ignored. According to Van Dijk, a discourse is developed by three dimensions: texts, social cognition and social contexts. Quite similarly, Norman Fairclough’s analysis is conducted based on a main question how can a micro text be related to the macro social contexts
LEARNING TO TEACH FOR NEW ENGLISH TEACHERS
The role of English as an international language is unavoidable force people to learn it in order to make them not to be left behind with others. Learning English in Indonesia, of course, needs a teacher as it is a foreign language here. This phenomenon make a lot of people want to be an English teacher as their job. However, to be a good teacher is not easy. One of the important things that someone should occupy is about the teaching method. Therefore, this paper tries to give a brief summary of well-known teaching methods and approaches in practice today for new teachers as a starting point from which they can modify their practice
