The Role and Reception of Bulgaria’s ‘Prophet’ Vanga : From the Communist Regime to the 21st Century
The “prophetess” or “Vanga” (Vangelia Dimitrova), often referred to as the modern-day Nostradamus, was a blind seer from Strumica, near the Bulgarian-Macedonian border. It is said that she began making accurate prophecies after losing her sight completely at the age of 19. Vanga was a prophetess who consistently enjoyed the support of both the government and the public. Affectionately known as “Grandma Vanga,” she frequently met with the president and other government officials and made numerous television appearances. In the 21st century, Vanga is revered in Bulgaria as a “prophet, healer, martyr, and saint.” This study aims to frst elucidate the lesser-known aspects of her relationship with the Communist Party during the Zhivkov regime. Secondly, it will examine the changes in Vanga’s role from the Communist era through democratization to the 21st century. Finally, it will explore the reasons for her widespread acceptance, ultimately addressing the question: Who is the “prophet” Vanga? This paper will investigate the following questions.departmental bulletin pape
