Non-European Internationality and Oral Geography: Seetzen’s Encounter with Tigriñña

Seetzen’s word lists of African languages, compiled during his stay in early 19th-century Cairo, contributed to the expanding interest in global linguistic diversity at the time but were long overlooked and only recently rediscovered as historically significant. This paper examines his encounter with Tigriñña – spoken in the northern Ethiopian highlands and modern-day Eritrea – which was then virtually unknown to European scholars. His documentation drew on Cairo’s multi-national diversity and Egypt’s wide-ranging connections, based on conversations with travelers from Northeastern Africa, including a Tigriñña speaker. The dialect, likely from central Tigray and influenced by Muslim terminology, contains valuable cultural insights. Estrategias útiles para reducir el estigma de la salud mental en los entornos sanitarios: un estudio Delphi

Healthcare settings’ stigma towards mental health problems is a public health phenomenon that is attracting increasing research interest. Our aim was to identify useful strategies for reducing stigma towards mental disorders in healthcare settings. A qualitative study was carried out to reach an inter judge agreement among experts on these strategies, with a n = 23 experts in mental health stigma and clinical practice from Argentine and Spain. Consensus was reached on useful strategies for mental health stigma reduction in health and social contexts. Training in communication skills and empathy is the most useful strategy reported, followed by multidisciplinary work and supervision of clinical practices. It is advisable to promote the implementation of communication and empathy strategies during the education and training of health and social professionals to reduce stigma.El estigma en contextos sanitarios hacia los problemas de salud mental es un fenómeno de salud pública que cada vez suscita mayor interés en la investigación. El objetivo del estudio fue identificar estrategias útiles para la reducción del estigma hacia las personas con trastornos mentales en entornos sanitarios. Se realizó un estudio cualitativo para llegar a un acuerdo entre expertos en estas estrategias, con una n = 23 personas expertas en estigma en salud mental y en práctica clínica de Argentina y España. Se detectaron estrategias útiles para la reducción del estigma en salud mental en contextos sociosanitarios. El entrenamiento en habilidades de comunicación y empatía es la estrategia señalada como más útil, seguida del trabajo multidisciplinar y la supervisión de las prácticas clínicas. Es conveniente promover la implementación de este tipo de estrategias en la formación y entrenamiento del personal de atención sociosanitaria para reducir el estigma en estos contextos

Assessing Canine Breed Versatility Using a Data-Based Versatility Index

Abstract: This is the very first data-based study to report on the versatility of 134 dog breeds. The purpose of this study was to create and apply a Versatility Index for breeds that had earned a title in designated sports in the 10 years from 2014-2023 and to rank the most versatile breeds. Using American Kennel Club (AKC) records of 493,477 dogs who earned titles in 18 sports, breeds were ranked, and the ten “most versatile” breeds were identified. There were 17,299 dogs with titles in the top ten breeds. Seven of the 18 sports in which all breeds could participate were targeted for analysis. For this study, versatility was defined as the breed earning a title in a variety of activities in which pet dogs participated with their owners. To provide background information on breed versatility, two surveys were conducted. Experienced dog trainers responded to a one question survey to determine the general perceptions of dog trainers regarding versatile breeds, and breed experts of the top ten breeds on the versatility index responded to a two-question survey related to the versatility of their specific breeds. The degree of association across sports was analyzed to determine if success in one sport was an indicator of breed versatility. The results of this study show that some breeds that are not typically expected to be the most versatile scored higher on the Versatility Index than breeds that are often perceived by trainers as the most versatile. The results also show that dogs who earned Obedience/Rally titles were more likely to earn titles in other areas

Tendencias emergentes en los estudios turísticos en clave latinoamericana

He present essay is a critical study that reflects on the main intellectual debates concerning neoliberalism and academic inequality in Latin American tourism studies. To this end, three stages are proposed that combine a dual analytical dimension: one epistemological and the other sociological. First, key aspects for considering and addressing the idea of neoliberalism in the social sciences of the Global South are explored. The second axis includes an analysis of dependency within tourism studies. Finally, the transformations in how cultural and tourism studies are thought and conducted from a Latin American perspective are examined. Through this approach, the aim is to contribute to the reflexivity of the field by problematizing not only the cognitive challenges that exist but also the power dynamics at play. This study serves as a non-exhaustive yet necessary invitation to construct new horizons of truth. Keywords: academic dependency, tourism studies, cultural studies, Latin America. El presente ensayo constituye un estudio crítico que reflexiona sobre los principales debates intelectuales relativos al neoliberalismo y la desigualdad académica en los estudios turísticos latinoamericanos. Para ello, se proponen tres etapas que combinan una doble dimensión analítica: una epistemológica y otra sociológica. En primer lugar, se exploran aspectos claves para pensar y abordar la idea de neoliberalismo en las ciencias sociales del sur. Por su parte, el segundo eje incluye el análisis de la dependencia al interior de los estudios turísticos. Finalmente, se exploran las transformaciones en las maneras de pensar y estudiar los estudios culturales y turísticos desde América Latina. Con todo lo anterior, se pretende contribuir a la reflexividad del campo, problematizando no solo los desafíos cognoscitivos que existen, sino las reglas que se ponen en juego bajo la dimensión del poder. Análisis de las condiciones necesarias de los estados de ánimo para el desarrollo de estrategias de aprendizaje en estudiantes universitarios

Moods, unlike emotions, are more enduring, diffuse, and lack a specific stimulus, modulating the degree of application of cognitive learning strategies. This research aims to analyse the interaction between mood states and learning strategies from the necessary conditions analytic perspective, differentiating this approach from traditional probabilistic models. A total of 270 university students enrolled in the Primary Education Degree programs at the University of Jaén (Andalusia, Spain) participated in the study. Accessibility and convenience sampling was carried out. The Mood Rating Scale and the Cognitive Strategies for Learning and Study Questionnaire were used. The results showed that the dimensions of learning strategies interact variably with specific mood states, such as joy, hostility, anxiety, and depression. From the logic of necessity, certain strategies are essential to achieve moderate levels of mood states such as joy, while other strategies, such as depressive mood, reveal the inherent complexity of the concept. In parallel, the sufficiency-based approach highlights how positive states facilitate the selection of the process, while the depressive state limits its effectiveness, reaffirming the differential value. We conclude by highlighting the importance of the necessary conditions analytic in identifying those mood states whose influence determines the development of learning strategies.Los estados de ánimo, a diferencia de las emociones, son más duraderos, difusos y carecen de un estímulo específico, modulando el grado de aplicación de estrategias cognitivas de aprendizaje. Esta investigación tiene como objetivo analizar la interacción entre estados de ánimo y estrategias de aprendizaje desde la perspectiva analítica de las condiciones necesarias, diferenciando este enfoque de los modelos probabilísticos tradicionales. Participaron 270 estudiantes universitarios del Grado de Educación Primaria de la Universidad de Jaén (Andalucía, España). Se realizó un muestreo de accesibilidad y conveniencia. Se utilizaron la Escala de Valoración del Estado de Ánimo y el Cuestionario de Estrategias Cognitivas para el Aprendizaje y el Estudio. Los resultados mostraron que las dimensiones de las estrategias de aprendizaje interactúan de manera variable con los estados de ánimo específicos, como alegría, hostilidad, ansiedad y depresión. Desde la lógica de la necesidad, ciertas estrategias resultan esenciales para alcanzar niveles moderados de estados de ánimo como alegría, mientras que otras estrategias, como el caso del estado de ánimo depresivo, revelan complejidad inherente al concepto. Paralelamente, el enfoque basado en suficiencia destaca cómo estados positivos facilitan la selección del proceso, mientras que el estado depresivo limita su efectividad, reafirmando el valor diferencial. Se concluye destacando la importancia del análisis de las condiciones necesarias en la identificación de aquellos estados de ánimo cuya injerencia determina el desarrollo de las estrategias de aprendizaje

"Streaming Noir": la evolución del thriller en las series españolas

Over the last few decades, Spanish film noir has evolved from a certain style of mannerism toward imitating US thrillers in a move toward domestic productions that address social issues familiar to the audience, yet without compromising the quality of the film-making. At the same time, a fascinating spillover effect has greatly contributed to television fiction, which has taken advantage of this source of inspiration to dedicate more hours to developing its characters and their motivations, in comparison to what can be achieved on celluloid. For example, as a result of the pandemic, the turning point for the rise of streaming platforms was a proliferation of national series such as Nasdrovia, Patria, Antidisturbiosand others, which hoped to culminate a revolution that had already been underway for some years. The aim of our analysis is to offer a chronology of this evolution in order to gain a greater understanding of this television phenomenon. Likewise, we will attempt to highlight the historical contexts and journalistic investigations, specifically cases such as Nacho Carretero's Fariña, which have justified the public's interest and represent a true reflection of the country's most pressing concerns and issues, such as political corruption, terrorism, organised crime, and others.A lo largo de las últimas décadas, el cine negro español ha ido evolucionando desde un cierto manierismo para emular a los thrillers norteamericanos hasta unos productos más autóctonos que, sin renunciar a la calidad en la factura de los mismos, tratan temas sociales más próximos a la audiencia. Paralelamente y como un efecto colateral de sumo interés, ello ha beneficiado sobremanera a las ficciones televisivas, las cuales han tomado esa fuente de inspiración con la ventaja de disponer de más horas para desarrollar a sus personajes y sus motivaciones que en el celuloide. Por ejemplo, el punto de inflexión que supuso la situación pandémica para el auge de las plataformas de streaming derivó en una verdadera proliferación de series nacionales (Nasdrovia, Patria, Antidisturbios, etc.) que aspiraban a culminar una revolución que ya se había ido gestando en los años anteriores. Nuestro análisis busca plantear una cronología para comprender mejor este fenómeno televisivo y, de igual manera, incidir en los contextos históricos e investigaciones periodísticas (en particular casos como Fariña de Nacho Carretero) que han justificado ese interés del público, fiel reflejo de las preocupaciones y temas de la más rabiosa actualidad (corrupción política, terrorismo, crimen organizado, etc.) del país

Electrónica y música tradicional extremeña: puentes sonoros para el mundo etnográfico femenino de Destello bravío (2021)

The identity clichés of Extremaduran musical folklore are the great sound resource to give voice to the female characters in Ainhoa Rodríguez's Twin Peaks from Extremadura, called Destello bravío (2021). This feature film deals with the ageing and disappearance of a small town in Badajoz from the female point of view, the pop and popular audiovisual world and the mysticism of a supposedly peaceful space. The past, present and future of the emptied Spain are configured through a musical proposal, which fluctuates between stereotypes of traditional music from Extremadura and the current sound, based on electronic music. The main objective of this research is precisely to study the creation of common sound bridges between the creative work of the composer Paloma Peñarrubia and the presence of popular pieces on the audiovisual plane. The choice of musical and visual references is geared towards the emotional bonding of the Extremaduran audience. Thus, references are established that can be appreciated in the musical instruments, the pieces or the voices. In short, the debut film by the director from Extremadura allows us to analyse the formulation of audiovisual sources from the popular imaginary of Extremadura in order to develop the dialectic between different times.Los tópicos identitarios del folklore musical extremeño son el gran recurso sonoro para dar voz a los personajes femeninos del Twin Peaks extremeño, de Ainhoa Rodríguez, llamado Destello bravío (2021). En este largometraje se plantea el envejecimiento y desaparición de una pequeña población pacense desde la mirada femenina, el mundo audiovisual pop y popular y el misticismo de un supuesto espacio tranquilo. El pasado, presente y futuro de la España vaciada son configurados a través de una propuesta musical, que fluctúa entre estereotipos de la música tradicional extremeña y el sonido actual, basado en la electrónica. El objetivo principal de esta investigación es precisamente estudiar la creación de puentes sonoros comunes entre el trabajo creativo de la compositora Paloma Peñarrubia y la presencia de las piezas populares en el plano audiovisual. La elección de referencias musicales y visuales está encaminada hacia la vinculación emocional del público extremeño. Así, se establecen referencias que se aprecian en los instrumentos musicales, las piezas escogidas o la configuración de voces. En definitiva, la ópera prima de la directora extremeña permite analizar la formulación de fuentes audiovisuales del imaginario popular extremeño para desarrollar la dialéctica entre diferentes tiempos
