Chatbot vs. Human: The Impact of Responsive Conversational Features on Users’ Responses to Chat Advisors

    Get PDF
As educational organizations increasingly consider supporting or replacing human chat advisors with chatbots, it is crucial to examine if users perceive a chatbot differently from a human. Chatbots’ conversational features may signal responsiveness and thus improve user responses. To explore this, we conducted three online experiments using a study advising setting. We computed pooled data analyses because the individual study results did not provide clear support for our hypotheses. Results indicate that users prefer human agents regarding competence and intention to use but not perceived enjoyment. Responsiveness increased likability, warmth, and satisfaction. Perceptions of the interaction mediated the responsiveness effects. Our findings suggest that educational organizations can support their study advising departments with well-functioning chatbots without eliciting negative user responses

In this episode, you’ll hear from Lindsay Morrison, a returned Peace Corps volunteer who served in Comoros who completed her MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) in spring 2023. Lindsay shares stories in her journey from deciding to study English in her undergraduate degree, to her volunteer work in Comoros, and her MA TESOL experiences. Lindsay also tells us about her current work as the ESOL Program and Family Engagement Administrator at the Casserly House in Boston, MA. You’ll hear Lindsay talk about her friend Haïna Keke’s NGO in Comoros. This NGS is named I’m A Rad African (IMARA), and you can learn more about it through this Vanity Fair article: https://www.vanityfair.fr/pouvoir/article/portrait-haina-keke-linspiratrice-de-reves-aux-comores Lindsay attended the MA TESOL program at UCF with funding through the Coverdell Fellowship. Empowering Education: Championing AI Awareness on Campus

    No full text
This presentation will cover four ongoing initiatives: 1) working with faculty and students to develop AI services tailored to enhance library experiences; 2) partnering with campus groups to plan/host conferences and workshops to create awareness of AI possibilities for teaching and learning; 3) negotiating and implementing campus-wide trials of AI tools; and 4) empowering library staff with the knowledge and skills necessary to harness the benefits and navigate the challenges posed by AI tools

    Teaching and Thinking with AI

    Get PDF
The excitement (and panic) surrounding AI is shattering expectations around assignments, assessment, class preparation and attendance, while challenging us to build more future-proof and inclusive classrooms. AI is rapidly changing how humans work and think. AI is also changing how we think about “average.” If AI can produce consistent “C” work, then we need to update our policies and grading. AI is even changing creativity. Together, we will examine the skills and curriculum that will matter most in this new age, why articulation of “quality” is essential and what policies and practices improve motivation and decrease cheating

Speculative Dialogues on eLit in a Post-AI World

    No full text
What could be the future state of current AI platforms after their tools have disappeared? What will replace AI when it becomes obsolete? How will works of AI-generated elit look like in a future where AI platforms have disappeared? This talk will explore questions about the future of elit in a Post-AI world. While conceived by a human author, the questions will serve as prompts to inquire AI tools about their own potential obsolescence. Using a structured framework--the nine thematic clusters of the Conference--, I\u27ll briefly examine potential insights after each topic. The format, though unconventional, draws from my experience in performing (with) elit, and I\u27ll briefly present similar speculative experiments. Considering the obsolescence of AI in a series of questions promotes a collective act of imagination. In the context of elit, a field inherently intertwined with innovation, this approach can resonate on a deep level. By questioning the future of the field in the context of AI\u27s obsolescence, I want to emphasize the human element in literature, suggesting that technology is but a tool in the larger narrative of human expression. By outlining these ideas as a continuous stream of questions, I\u27ll mirror the experimental nature of elit itself, proposing a meta-narrative that serves as a demonstration of its principles. Example ( Platform Deaths and Migrations ): Human \u3e\u3e In a Post-AI world, what will become of the data and digital artifacts left behind on obsolete platforms? What efforts will be made to preserve or erase these remnants? AI \u3e\u3e Preservation of digital artifacts on obsolete platforms will depend on their value and privacy concerns. Efforts will include digital archiving, data rescue initiatives, and community projects, while obsolete or privacy-sensitive data may be erased. The approach will balance historical preservation with privacy and technological advancements

The Effects of ESG on the Financial Performance of Aerospace & Defense Companies

    Get PDF
This study examines the relationship between Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance (ESG) activity and financial performance in the context of firms operating in the Aerospace & Defense industry. As societal pressure increases for companies to adopt ESG and related corporate sustainability practices, it is crucial to understand the repercussions of such adoptions. As the Aerospace & Defense industry continues to grow and capitalize on post-COVID travel booms, military modernization efforts, and increased demand for advanced aerospace technology, it is essential to understand the consequences of ESG implementation. By examining data from 2012 – 2023, this study produced results regarding the relationship between ESG activity and financial performance. The results indicated a positive relationship between ESG activity and financial performance. The results also show that the relationship between ESG and financial performance has grown stronger over time consistent with the fact that proxies for ESG activity such as ESG Score and ESG Disclosure have increased in recent years

Theatrical Tools to Support the Community Agreement

    Get PDF
When working with a new group of people, it is common practice to create a Community Agreement in pursuit of quality outcomes. This tool uses dialogue to methodically outline the desired educational or creative environment, democratically articulating the commitments and expectations to remain in place throughout the duration of the group\u27s existence and setting all participants in accord with the work to come. However, the Community Agreement can fail to support individual participants during moments of inevitable tension. In such moments, participants may experience unplanned emotional or physical reactions in response to triggering material or ideas. To navigate these reactions and ensure the Community Agreement is sustained throughout the entire process, it is necessary to introduce specific operational tools. One solution lies in Liz Lerman\u27s Critical Response Process (CRP) and Theatrical Intimacy\u27s boundary-establishing practice of Button, which are tools commonly found within the theatrical setting that strategically work to guide participants through moments of heightened tension so they can return their focus to the overall objective. This thesis begins by demonstrating an instance where the Community Agreement fails to support participants when uncontrollable discourse arises in the graduate classroom. I present the addition of CRP and Button as appropriate and effective solutions to remedy this observed weakness and test them in the undergraduate classroom. Turning focus to my field of study, the last part of this thesis contextualizes these dialogical tools in the Theatre for Young Audiences field, offering suggestions regarding the application of these tools with Elementary, Middle, and High School students
