Beethoven’s use of the Damper Pedal: Through comparisons with his contemporary composers       １  L. v. ベートーヴェンのダンパー・ペダルの用法 ――同時代の作曲家との比較を通して――  内﨑 章太  要旨  本研究は、ルートヴィヒ・ヴァン・ベートーヴェン Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) が楽譜上で指示したダンパー・ペダルの用法の特徴を、同時代に試みられていたペダルの用法と比較することを通じて明らかにすることを目的とする。 ベートーヴェンのダンパー・ペダルに関する研究は、その用法を分類することによって行われてきており、彼がいかなる目的でペダルを指示したかについては盛んに議論されてきた。しかし、先行研究の課題として、同時代に試みられていた用法を十分に概観できていないことが挙げられる。従来の研究においてもベートーヴェンの用法と比較するために、当時の教則本や、同時代に活躍した作曲家の用法をみることは行っているが、いずれも参照する資料、対象とする作曲家が限られており、不十分であった。従って、本研究では従来よりも広範な調査を通じて当時のダンパー・ペダルの用法を概観する。その上でベートーヴェンの用法との比較を行い、いずれの用法が共通しているか、ベートーヴェンはいずれの用法を用いていないか、いずれの用法において彼の独自性がみられるか確認し、ベートーヴェンが楽譜上に指示したペダルの用法の特徴を明らかにする。 さらに、先行研究における用法の分類はペダルを利用した音楽表現に焦点が当てられており、その表現がダンパー・ペダルの引き起こすいずれの現象を利用したものであるかといった視点が欠けている。そこで本稿では、「弦の共鳴」、「音の延長」、「音の重なり」といったダンパー・ペダルの基本的現象を起点として各用法を分類する。また、ペダルは音楽を構成する様々な要素に影響を与えると考えられるが、従来の研究では、各要素に焦点を当てた分析が十分にされていない。そこで本研究では、ペダルがいかなる要素に影響を与えているか確認し、見出された各要素に焦点を当て、ペダルの用法を考察する。 第 1章では、1840年までに書かれた 29冊の鍵盤教則本を参照し、ダンパー・ペダルに関する記述の比較を通して、当時のペダルの使用実態や用法について確認した。第 2章では、ベートーヴェンと同時代に活躍した 61名の作曲家のピアノ独奏曲において指示されているペダルの分析を通して、当時試みられていた用法を概観する。第 3章では、ペダルが指示された全ての作品を対象にベートーヴェンの用法をみていく。そして第 4 章において、当時試みられていた用法とベートーヴェンの用法とを比較し、第 5章（結論）において彼の特徴を明らかにする。 比較においては、①ペダルの使用実態、②どのような指示方法が用いられていたか、③どのような使用効果がみられるか、④ペダルが音楽の諸要素（ダイナミクス、和声、アーティキュレーション、フレーズ、形式）にいかなる影響を与えているかに着目した。 2  ①使用実態として、先行研究ではダンパー・ペダルの指示が初めて記された作品は、1793年に出版された D.シュタイベルト (1765-1823) の《ポプリ第 6番》であると考えられていたが、本調査を通じて 1784 年頃に出版された J.F.X.シュテルケル (1750-1817) の《8 つのピアノ小品集》StWV 229 第 2 曲にダンパー・ペダルの指示が記されていたことが明らかとなった (§2:2:1)。楽譜に指示を記譜するという点では、StWV 229:2 が他の作曲家に影響を与えた形跡はみられない。一方で、《ポプリ第 6番》以降、楽譜にペダル指示が記された作品の出版が増えており、シュタイベルトの影響の大きさが窺える(§2:2:2)。ベートーヴェンは、1790 年代のスケッチにダンパー・ペダルの使用に関するメモを残しているが(§3:2)、指示を最初に書き込んだ出版作品は作品 15 (1801)である(§3:2:1)。ペダル指示を楽譜に記すという点において、他の作曲者に追従したと言える。  ②に関して、ペダルの指示には、使用と解除を指し示すものと、演奏者の行為を制限するものがみられた。後者の例としてペダルの使用を禁じる指示が 1790年代の作品からみられるが (§2:3:1)、この種の指示をベートーヴェンは用いていない。一方、ペダルが解除されることを禁じる“Sempre Ped.”は、ベートーヴェンが最初に用いた可能性が高い(§3:3)。また、休符の音価を細分化し解除されるタイミングを正確に記す方法は、ベートーヴェンの作品にのみ確認でき、彼独自の工夫と考えられる (§3:4:1)。そして、ベートーヴェンはいかなる方法でペダルを指示するか出版地域ごとに配慮していた可能性が考えられる (§3:3)。  ベートーヴェンの用法は、多くの点で当時試みられていた用法と共通していた(③, ④)。 ベートーヴェンが用いなかった用法としては、グリッサンドに対するペダル使用などが挙げられる (§3:4:1)。また、教則本や他の作曲家の作品中には多様なペダルとダンパー・ペダルの組み合わせが確認できたが (§1:5:2, §2:4:1)、ベートーヴェンがダンパー・ペダルと併用を指示したのはシフト・ペダルのみであった(§3:4:1)。 彼独自の用法と考えられるものとして、ペダルが作り出す響きが減衰に伴って変化する様子を表現に取り入れること (§3:4:1)、低音域においてのみ響きの濁りを作り出すこと (§3:4:1)、和声的運動性の操作による音楽の流れの漸次的変化の形成(§3:4:2)、フレーズのリズム構造に影響を与えることを利用したリズムの二重性の形成(§3:4:2)、主題回帰の直前に混濁した響きを作り出すことによる主題回帰の印象付け(§3:4:2)、セクション間にまたがるペダル使用 (§3:4:2) などが挙げられる。 そして、ベートーヴェン独自の用法は音楽の流れと密接に関わる場合が多く、音楽の流れを作り出す一要素として機能するようにペダルを活用していたことが窺える(§5)。彼ほど音楽の流れと密接に関わるペダル用法をみせた作曲家は、本調査を通じて確認できていない。 以上より、ベートーヴェンはダンパー・ペダルの用法に関して、その多くを同時代の作曲家と共有しながらも、ペダルによる新たな表現を模索し、特に音楽の流れを作り出す上で独自の用法を切り開いたと結論付けられる。         L. v. Beethoven’s use of the Damper Pedal ――Through comparisons with his contemporary composers――  Shota UCHIZAKI  Abstract  This study aimed to clarify characteristics of the Damper Pedal used by Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827) in his compositions by comparing it with the pedal usage of his contemporaries. Research on Beethoven’s use of the Damper Pedal based on its usage is abundant, and extensive discussions have been conducted on its purpose. However, a limitation of previous studies is that they do not provide an adequate overview of his peers’ usage during the same period. Prior research has compared Beethoven’s Damper Pedal usage with other information, such as comments from tutors and composers who were active in the same period. However, each case lacks comprehensive data on reference materials and target composers. This study fills this gap through extensive research. It offers insight into several previously overlooked aspects and clarifies the characteristics of Beethoven’s pedal usage, as indicated by his scores. The present study sought to address the following research questions. Which usage was common? Which usage was not undertaken by Beethoven? Which usage demonstrates Beethoven’s originality?  Additionally, the classification of pedal usage in previous studies focused on musical expressions using the pedal, lacking a perspective on the effect of the damper pedal, which made such expressions possible. In this study, therefore, we categorize each usage according to the damper pedal’s basic phenomena, such as “string resonance,” “sound prolongation,” and “sound overlapping.” Although the pedal is thought to influence various musical elements, conventional studies have not sufficiently analyzed the pedal by focusing on each element. This study, therefore, confirms which elements the pedal influences and discusses the pedal usage with a focus on each element. In Chapter 1, we examine 29 keyboard tutors written until 1840 and compared the descriptions of the damper pedal to confirm its usage. In Chapter 2, through an analysis of the pedals indicated in the solo piano works of 61 composers who were active at the same time as Beethoven, the pedal use is confirmed and classified. Furthermore, in Chapter 3, we examine Beethoven’s pedal use in all works where it is indicated. Chapter 4 compares Beethoven’s pedal use with the usage attempted at the time, and in Chapter 5 (Conclusion), we clarify his characteristics. The comparison focuses on the following: ① the actual circumstances regarding damper pedal use, ② types of indications used, ③ types of effects produced by the damper pedal use, and ④ how the damper pedal affected various musical elements (dynamics, harmony, articulation, 2  phrasing, musical form). Regarding ①, in previous research, the first work believed to include notated indications for the damper pedal was “6me Pot-pourri” by D. Steibelt (1765–1823), published in 1793. However, this study reveals that indications for the damper pedal were already present in the second piece of “8 Piéces pour le Piano-Forte” StWV 229 by J. F. X. Sterkel (1750–1817), published around 1784 (§2:2:1). However, there is no evidence that StWV 229:2 influenced other composers in the instruction notations in the score. On the other hand, since “6me Pot-pourri,” the publication of works with pedal indications increased, indicating the extent of Steibert’s influence (§2:2:2). Beethoven also left notes on the damper pedal use in his sketches from the 1790s (§3:2), but the first published work with written instructions was Op. 15 (1801 [§3:2:1]). Thus, it can be said that Beethoven followed other composers in writing pedal instructions in his scores. Regarding ②, there were two types of pedal indications: those that indicated the use and release of the pedal and those that provided information on how the pedal restricted the performer’s actions. As an example of the second category, we can find an indication forbidding the use of the pedal in works from the 1790s (§2:3:1); however, Beethoven did not use this type of indication. Meanwhile, “Sempre Ped.,” which forbids the release of the pedal, was likely first used by Beethoven (§3:3). The precise timing of the release of rests by subdividing their note values can be found only in Beethoven’s works and is considered his original idea (§3:4:1). It is possible that Beethoven took into account the way in which the pedal was indicated for each region of publication (§3:3). Many of Beethoven’s usages were similar to those attempted at that time (③, ④). Among the uses not found in Beethoven’s works is the use of the pedal for glissandos (§3:4:1). In addition, although various combinations of pedals and damper pedals can be observed in the works of other composers (§1:5:2, §2:4:1), Beethoven used only the shift pedal in combination with the damper pedal (§3:4:1). However, it is highly probable that he discovered the following usage in his own unique manner: incorporating the way the sonority created by the pedal changed with the attenuation of the sound into the musical expression (§3:4:1); creating a blurred sound only in the lower registers; creating gradual changes in musical flow by manipulating harmonic motility (§3:4:2); creating a rhythmic duality by utilizing the pedal’s effect on the composition’s rhythmic structure (§3:4:2); creating an indistinct sound immediately before returning to the theme to create such an impression (§3:4:2); the use of the pedal across sections (§3:4:2); and so on. Beethoven’s characteristic use is often closely related to the flow of the music, and it can be seen that he used the pedal to function as a component in creating the flow of the music (§5). We have not been able to identify any composer in this study who used the pedal as closely related to the flow of music as Beethoven. From the above discussion, it can be concluded that, while Beethoven used the damper pedal in a manner similar to that of his contemporaries, he created new expressions with the pedal and developed his own unique usage, especially in producing the flow of music.
