A study of Tamakazura as a "substitute (Katashiro)" of Yugao : from the perspective of Hikaru Genji's directive toward the "lighting (kagaribi)"

『源氏物語』「玉鬘十帖」は亡き夕顔の娘玉鬘を見つけた光源氏が六条院の夏の町で養育するうちに惹かれていく様子と劇的な顛末が描かれる。夜の暗闇で「物の気」に命を奪われ頓死した夕顔は、光源氏に強い印象を残していた。本稿では「篝火」巻で玉鬘を訪ねた光源氏が夜の明かりの暗さに過剰反応し、右京大夫に篝火の明るさを保つことを厳命する場面に着目し、玉鬘が夕顔の「形代」として強く意識されていたことを明らかにする。The Tale of Genji, "Tamakazura part" describes how Hikaru Genji found Tamakazura, the daughter of the deceased Yugao, and became attracted to her in the summer town of Rokujo-In, and how the dramatic turn of events unfolded. Yugao, who died an untimely death in the darkness of the night after being killed by "Mono-no-ke," left a strong impression on Hikaru Genji. This paper focuses on the scene in "Lighting" in overreacts to the darkness of the night light and strictly orders Ukyo-tayu to maintain the brightness. An empiricist consideration of truth in William James's pragmatism

本論の目的は、ウィリアム・ジェイムズの言う「真理」という概念に照準を定めて、その要諦を抉り出すところにある。ジェイムズにあっては、「真理」は、観念と行為が創出する一連のできごとの連接的な推移であり、「真実化」という観念の運動である。そこでは真であることと有用であることが結合しており、それを可能にしているのは、「真理」を一つの動態的な経験として捉えようとするジェイムズの経験主義的視座である。This paper aims to clarify the meaning of the concept of truth that William James emphasizes in Pragmatism. According to James, truth signifies the conjunctive transition of a sequence of events brought about by our ideas and the acts based upon them--the movement of ideas known as verification. It is a process that unites two conditions: being true and being useful. In other words, through verification, we can assert that our ideas are true because they are useful, or alternatively, they are useful because they are true. American Protestant missionaries who came to Japan during the occupation period : the case of nisei (Second-Generation Japanese) Missionaries

本研究は、占領期に来日した日系二世宣教師を事例にして、北米の日系人プロテスタント史と占領期日本プロテスタント史との繋がりを考察することで、当該時期の日米越境プロテスタント史研究に貢献することを目的とする。先ず、占領期日本における日米プロテスタント及びGHQ/SCAP によるプロテスタント宣教師受入体制の変遷を体制が整う1947年までについて概観する。次に、1945〜51年にGHQ/SCAPの承認を得て訪日した日系二世プロテスタント宣教師29人に着目し、彼(女)の特徴(国籍、性別、生年月日、来日日、活動種別、学歴、来日歴等)を、来日宣教師全体と比較し、日系二世の特徴を検討する。最後に、グレース・キョーコ・イマモト(Grace Kyoko Imamoto, 1920.1.14 - 2018.3.14)を事例に、来日日系二世宣教師の個人史を家庭環境、生活環境、強制収容、召命、来日経験、その後に分けて概観し、その顕著な特性と今後の検討課題を考察したい。This study aims to contribute to the research on the transnational Protestant history between Japan and the U.S. during the occupation period by examining the connection between the history of the Japanese American Protestants in North America and the Protestant history during the occupation era in Japan, using the Nisei (second-generation Japanese American) missionaries who came to Japan during that time as a case study. First, the study provides an overview of the changes in the system through which the American Protestant missionaries were received in Japan during the occupation, particularly focusing on the system up to 1947, when it was first fully established by the cooperation of both U.S. Protestants and GHQ/SCAP. Next, it examines the 29 Nisei Protestant missionaries who visited Japan from 1945 to 1951 with the GHQ/SCAP approval and such features as their nationality, gender, date of birth, date of arrival, types of activities the person was involved in., education, and prior visits to Japan. These characteristics are then compared to those of other groups of missionaries who came to Japan, highlighting the distinctive traits of the Nisei missionaries. Finally, the study examines Grace Kyoko Imamoto (January 14, 1920–March 14, 2018), as a case study, and reviews her personal history in terms of her family background, living conditions, internment, Christian calling, experiences in Japan, and later life.
