Commentary on Buechele et al. (2023): Communicating Across the Divide – a Place for Physics in Music?
The theory of Jesse Berezovsky (2019) is a rare foray of a physicist into the territory of music science. In their follow-up article in Empirical Musicology Review, Ryan Buechele, Alex Cooke, and Jesse Berezovsky (2024) show how the evolution of Western tuning systems and compositions can be rationalized by a theoretical model that describes a trade-off between minimizing sensory dissonance and maximizing compositional variety. From the Renaissance period onwards there was a trend towards more dissonance, and more compositional variety in both tuning systems and compositions. While this historical progression has perhaps been described qualitatively elsewhere, this model provides a more precise quantitative description of the phenomenon. The validity and scope of this model ought to be tested further by comparing its predictions with empirical measurements of tuning systems in both Western and non-Western cultures, alongside predictions of other theories of scale evolution. In the hope of encouraging and facilitating more of these interdisciplinary endeavors, I discuss some of my anecdotal experiences as a physical scientist embedded in the music science community, and offer advice on how to achieve better understanding and communication across disciplines

Polyphony, Uncertainty, and Exploration in Sonata Form: Commentary on De Souza, Dvorsky, and Oyon
The following is a commentary on De Souza, Dvorsky, and Oyon's (2024) target article on polyphonic texture and sonata form. Their study suggests that development sections display more polyphony than exposition sections, as indicated by lower onset synchrony. However, the expected increase in polyphony during transitions was not observed. Using the exploration-exploitation framework from cognitive science, I propose potential explanations for these findings. I also recommend that future research on polyphonic texture incorporates expert evaluations alongside computational metrics to achieve a more nuanced and comprehensive understanding of musical texture

The Case for Remote Work Arrangements for Rural Youth with Disabilities Living in Developing Countries
Remote working arrangements, expanded due to the growing connectivity infrastructure, can improve the wellbeing of rural youth with disabilities (RYD), for whom accessible location-based work are rare in developing countries. To inquire into this, I will first discuss the disabling barriers in rural areas, with a focus on jobs, and then present the case for remote work, discussing the recent trends in digitization of work. I will then demonstrate that improvements in wellbeing of rural youth with disabilities must be the main criterion to assess remote work's promise. I conclude by suggesting a way forward: governing the Internet as a "commons" for all
The Relationship of Physical Activity to Anxiety and Resilient Coping Among Higher Education Employees
Background: Physical activity (PA) can positively affect mental health, yet many aspects of this relationship (degree of effectiveness across populations and conditions, biological mechanisms, etc.) remain unexplored.
Aim: This study seeks to understand how PA is associated with anxiety, a common mental health condition, and resilient coping, the ability of an individual to overcome personal stress; and, how PA can be utilized to alleviate anxiety and strengthen resilient coping.
Methods: Data collected from Health Assessment surveys assessed how several types of PA (moderate, vigorous, moderate-to-vigorous, and strength training) are related to anxiety and resilient coping.
Results: Analysis revealed statistically significant relationships between PA and anxiety and PA and resilient coping. The findings from this study establish positive associations between PA and anxiety and resilient coping, emphasizing the powerful influence of PA as a mental health therapeutic. Such results suggest that PA could become a key component for attenuating mental health crises of workforces within higher education institutions.
Conclusion: These findings serve as convincing evidence that organizations should assess ways to incorporate PA into their policies and programs for the health and well-being of employees, namely those of higher education institutions
