Those implemented by Elio, who lives in Paciano (Perugia), in a farmhouse immersed in thethings of his creativity, are configured as housing strategies defined and continually redefinedstarting from the use of heterogeneous tools and materials, collected from contingent circumstancesand adapted to contextual needs. Like Levi-Strauss’s bricoleur, he combines skills, expertiseand available resources (things out of everyday use, found waste collection centers andgarages of relatives and friends), configuring an instrumental universe in constantly adapting hisliving space based on extra-ordinary and always progressive aesthetics. Elio does not buy anddoes not sell, but retrieves and builds, giving new trajectories to the recomposed things and newmeaning to his practices, whether they are family, social, work, or existential
Landscapes of coexistence is a term used by a team of zoologists in a 2019 article referring tothe degree of tolerance between a population of lions and humans within three African naturalparks and meant as «the sustainable cohabitation of people and lions within a shared landscape»[Western et al. 2019, 204). Based on field research carried out in three alpine valleys, ValleSusa, Val Chisone and Val Troncea, my essay tries to broaden the understanding of landscapesof coexistence by arguing that they are complex sites of relationships where humans and nonhumans alike shape and co-shape them through interactions but also frictions and conflicts thatrevolve around a small bird, Petronia petronia
Inégalités sociales et diversité culturelle: de nouveaux défis pour l’ethnologie de l’Europe Social Inequalities and Cultural Diversity: New Challenges for the Anthropology of Europe
This article aims first and foremost to retrace the history of the notions of social inequality andcultural diversity in the human and social sciences. For more than a century, these notions havebeen fundamental to sociology and anthropology, but their meaning has evolved due to profoundchanges in the context. We will insist in particular on the perspectives inherited from Durkheim,Bourdieu, Mauss and Lévi-Strauss to shed light on these notions in French academic research.Secondly, we will show how the conceptions of inequality and diversity are in crisis today. Wewill propose some theoretical paths to renew these notions in contemporary European societies, based on a few ethnographic examples taken from the field of traditional festivals and games
Les musiciens de l’ensemble Orpheus XXI (Jordi Savall) en temps de pandémie1 When there are no more concerts... The musicians of the Orpheus XXI ensemble (Jordi Savall) in times of pandemic
In the context of the pandemic, the absence of a concert serves as a heuristic tool to see what migrant musicians of the orchestra Orpheus XXI (Jordi Savall) in France and Germany do during this time. The lack of concerts impacts their economic income, their daily and family lives, and reduce the practice of their profession as musicians; they develop strategies to compensate this lack. The pandemic also exposes and reinforces inequalities in economic and professional status between musicians
Prefigurare il lavoro del futuro. Scenari etnografici tra crisi finanziaria e crisi pandemica
This article is focused on the transformations of work affectingvarious sectors of production, goods and services, and the challenges of anthropology in understanding the extent of these changes which are being accelerated by the impact of the pandemic. The constellation of new skills, rolesand tasks generated by the latest generation of digital technologies is analysed through the contribution of recent theoretical thoughts. The implications of these changes are manifold and depend on the various theoretical approaches taken into consideration. In order to empirically grasp these changes in the workplace, ethnographic research must necessarily acquire new and morespecific knowledge in the field of information technology and artificial intelligence, and adapt its methodologies to new contexts that appear quite heterogeneous
Messa in strada. Note etnografiche sull’occupazione dello spazio attraverso la religione tra gli srilankesi alla Sanità (Napoli) Mass on the street. Ethnographic notes on the occupation of space through religion among Sri Lankans living in Sanità (Naples)
This article aims at analyzing the complex processes and social dynamics stemming from the looking for a space to pray by Sri Lankan Catholics during the long period of Covid-19 pandemic. The focus will be on the social meanings of occupying a piece of public street in the grassroots neighborhood of Sanità, in the hearth of Naples’ historical center. Sanità is a space managed by different power with strong forms of self-organization that rule things without recurring to a formal/legal mediation, creating an urban life so unusual in the European cities. Starting from showing off how this direct mediation works, the article will dialogue with the social science debate regarding how migrant religious groups move within the framework of “local rules” in the use of social space that is also a practice of group affirmation, claiming for the right to the city and negotiating within power relationships
Essere sul campo. Dialoghi e comunicazioni etnografiche a distanza Being in the field. Distance ethnographic dialogues and communications
The restrictions due to the Covid pandemic in which we lived from 2020 to 2022 imposed distancing as a social behavior and the use of technological devices to partially compensate for the impossibility of interpersonal contact. Field research was also limited due to the impossibility of moving around the area, distrust of close contact and the precautions necessary to preventcontagion. Therefore, the question arose as to what was meant by «being in the field». This paper is based on long-lasting ethnographies and on the reflections that emerged following the production of dense and profound ethnographic documents based on data collected through WhatsApp, one of the most widespread digital messaging platforms
