Nonholonomic LL systems on central extensions and the hydrodynamic Chaplygin sleigh with circulation

We consider nonholonomic systems whose configuration space is the central extension of a Lie group and have left invariant kinetic energy and constraints. We study the structure of the associated Euler-Poincare-Suslov equations and show that there is a one-to-one correspondence between invariant measures on the original group and on the extended group. Our results are applied to the hydrodynamic Chaplygin sleigh, that is, a planar rigid body that moves in a potential flow subject to a nonholonomic constraint modeling a fin or keel attached to the body, in the case where there is circulation around the body.Comment: 22 pages; 4 figure

The motion of the 2D hydrodynamic Chaplygin sleigh in the presence of circulation

    Get PDF
We consider the motion of a planar rigid body in a potential flow with circulation and subject to a certain nonholonomic constraint. This model is related to the design of underwater vehicles. The equations of motion admit a reduction to a 2-dimensional nonlinear system, which is integrated explicitly. We show that the reduced system comprises both asymptotic and periodic dynamics separated by a critical value of the energy, and give a complete classification of types of the motion. Then we describe the whole variety of the trajectories of the body on the plane.Comment: 25 pages, 7 figures. This article uses some introductory material from arXiv:1109.321

Exercising with an automated insulin delivery system: qualitative insight into the hopes and expectations of people with type 1 diabetes

For people with type 1 diabetes (T1DM), regular exercise can be highly beneficial. Although exercise has been shown to improve quality of life and health for people living with T1DM, there are common barriers. To examine such issues, we explored the perceived impact that automated insulin delivery systems could have on people with T1DM and their families. One common theme found was hopes, expectations and impact on sports and exercise. Four sites (United States: three; UK: one) were involved in this study. Two hundred and eighty-four participants were recruited across all sites; participants comprised: children (9–11 years); adolescents (12–18 years); parents/caretakers of children and adolescents with T1DM; adults with T1DM (18–77 years); and their significant others/partners. Between May and December 2015, focus groups and semi-structured interviews were conducted and analysed using content analysis. Three themes found related to the benefits of automated insulin delivery systems: (a) more freedom and spontaneity in the individual’s ability to exercise; (b) relief from worry of hypoglycaemia as a result of exercise; (c) removing the ‘guesswork’ of adjusting insulin for exercise. Two further themes emerged relating to potential concerns with regard to safely exercising while wearing an automated insulin delivery system. Further research is encouraged with a view to providing accurate algorithms and increasing confidence for those using automated insulin delivery systems and, in turn, for their exercise colleagues and loved ones

Black Hole Mass Estimates Based on CIV are Consistent with Those Based on the Balmer Lines

Using a sample of high-redshift lensed quasars from the CASTLES project with observed-frame ultraviolet or optical and near-infrared spectra, we have searched for possible biases between supermassive black hole (BH) mass estimates based on the CIV, Halpha and Hbeta broad emission lines. Our sample is based upon that of Greene, Peng & Ludwig, expanded with new near-IR spectroscopic observations, consistently analyzed high S/N optical spectra, and consistent continuum luminosity estimates at 5100A. We find that BH mass estimates based on the FWHM of CIV show a systematic offset with respect to those obtained from the line dispersion, sigma_l, of the same emission line, but not with those obtained from the FWHM of Halpha and Hbeta. The magnitude of the offset depends on the treatment of the HeII and FeII emission blended with CIV, but there is little scatter for any fixed measurement prescription. While we otherwise find no systematic offsets between CIV and Balmer line mass estimates, we do find that the residuals between them are strongly correlated with the ratio of the UV and optical continuum luminosities. Removing this dependency reduces the scatter between the UV- and optical-based BH mass estimates by a factor of approximately 2, from roughly 0.35 to 0.18 dex. The dispersion is smallest when comparing the CIV sigma_l mass estimate, after removing the offset from the FWHM estimates, and either Balmer line mass estimate. The correlation with the continuum slope is likely due to a combination of reddening, host contamination and object-dependent SED shapes. When we add additional heterogeneous measurements from the literature, the results are unchanged.Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal. 37 text pages + 8 tables + 23 figures. The impact of chemometrics on food traceability

    Get PDF
In the last decades, mankind has become totally aware about the importance of food quality: nowadays authentication and traceability are words of general use. Food authentication verifies how much a food is in accordance with its label description and law and it could be considered a further guarantee for the quality and safety of a foodstuff. The traceability of food could be considered an essential element in ensuring safety and high quality of food. The synergistic use of instrumental analytical techniques and chemometrics represents a promising way to obtain trustworthy results in the development of authenticity and traceability models. This chapter deals with the potentialities of chemometrics tools in resolving some real issues related to food traceability and authenticity. Particular attention will be paid to the use of some exploratory, classification and discrimination techniques. In the first part of this chapter, a briefly description of European regulations (Authenticity and Traceability: the European Union point of view), and traceability and authenticity markers (Authenticity and Traceability: a scientific point of view) is reported. The second part is split into two sections: namely Food Authenticity and Food Traceability applications, where the main features and advantages of some chemometrics approaches are presented
