Column and Plate Compressive Strengths of Aircraft Structural Materials: Extruded 24S-T Aluminum Alloy

    Get PDF
Column and plate compressive strengths of extruded 24S-T aluminum alloy were determined both within and beyond the elastic range from tests of thin-strip columns and local-instability tests of H-, Z-,and channel-section columns. These tests are part of an extensive research investigation to provide data on the' structural strength of various aircraft materials. The results are presented in the form of curves and charts that are suitable for use in the design and analysis of aircraft structures

Tensile Properties of Some Structural Sheet Materials Under Rapid-Heating Conditions

    Get PDF
The results of the NACA tests to determine the tensile strength of some structural sheet materials heated to failure at temperature rates from 0.2 deg. F to 100 deg F per second under constant load conditions are reviewed . Yield and rupture stresses obtained under rapid-heating conditions are compared with the results of conventional elevated-temperature tensile tests. The relation between rapid-heating tests, short-time creep tests, and conventional creep tests is discussed . The application of a phenomenological theory for calculating rapid-heating curves is shown. Methods are given for predicting yield and rupture stresses and temperatures from master curves and temperature-rate parameter

Structural efficiencies of various aluminum, titanium, and steel alloys at elevated temperatures

    Get PDF
Efficient temperature ranges are indicated for two high-strength aluminum alloys, two titanium alloys, and three steels for some short-time compression-loading applications at elevated temperatures. Only the effects of constant temperatures and short exposure to temperature are considered, and creep is assumed not to be a factor. The structural efficiency analysis is based upon preliminary results of short-time elevated-temperature compressive stress-strain tests of the materials. The analysis covers strength under uniaxial compression, elastic stiffness, column buckling, and the buckling of long plates in compression or in shear
