Pohled na literaturu pro děti a mládež s tematikou handicapu přináší zajímavá zjištění jak z literárněhistorické, tak ze sociologizující imagologické perspektivy. Způsob, jímž je handicap zobrazován, totiž vypovídá mnohé o tom, jak společnost k handicapovaným přistupuje a jaké hodnotové vzory v intencionální literatuře předkládá dětem. Česká literatura pro děti a mládež v první polovině 20. století zobrazuje handicapované postavy především jako subjekty nárokující si čtenářův soucit a účast s jejich osudem.
